Romania to Bulgaria crossing

Just a quick word of warning to people.

I stopped off at Giurgiu on the border yesterday to make an early crossing. While i was cruising around the town trying to suss out somewhere to stay I was pulled over by a group of official looking guys who then demanded money as a tourist/crossing tax!

I twigged that the ones in uniform were only in a security type get up and when i asked for ID they said we should go to there office to sort this out. Didnt fancy that for some strange reason so i quickly rode off. There were four of them so it was a little diconcerting, please be aware of this scam, i was prettey stupid to stop in all honesty.

Finally, best to change money before crossing as the first town i got to wouldnt take the Romanian currency cos it is to unreliable, that was useful to!

Otherwise, two fantastic countries.

will,
cheers for the warning
i cross over on thursday .
second your comments - this part of the world is a well kept secret. I have only met4 other western bikes and seen a dozen other bikes here in romania.
Staying local houses well recommended - hospitality is huge - amazing people.
Recommend a visit to Zarnesti nr brasov. www.clcp.ro freindly wolves - lovely people.
Park the bike and explore the mountains on foot - u will not be disappointed.

I'm planning a tour to Romania, Ukraine, Georgia and possibly Azer. Any advice?

Is it true that there is a 30mph speed limit for bikes throughout Romania (hence there are hardly any there)? Has anyone had the police use this as an excuse to extract cash?

Also - is a carnet needed? And is insurance easily available for such countries?

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob

Just been through romania and wasnt aware of any special speed limit in force for bikes, although you are right there are very few bikes there in comparison with the other eastern european countries i passed through. Ý would suspect if there is such a law it relates to the size of the bike or age of the rider but regardless throughout Romania i saw many police officers, and they saw me, and regardless of my speed showed me no ýnterest at all, i was in romania for about a week.

A carnet is not requýred for Romania and as for insurance i was not covered on my green card section of my policy, be worth checking yours, but was not required to purchase any thýrd party insurance at the border eýther.

Hope this is of use, if you need anything else let me know, otherwise have a great trýp in what is an amazing country.

Will
