Romania recommendation for (easy) dirt roads?

Hi everyone,

we are riding to Romania (From London).
We aim for Transylvania. We would like if possible to do some non tarmac roads / dirt roads around there. Scenic as well if possible :)

I have a Versys (with road tyres) which is not cut for real off-road, but I would like, nonetheless, to do some interesting dirt roads (if not too hard).
Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Hi Maria,

Sadly romania as well is getting alot of road asphalted :O.
We just came from there, and the only nice offroad we got was the route north from Curtea de Arges to the transfaragasan alpine road.
When you leave Curtea ( going north ), keep in the valley, at the end of town there is a superbe wildcamping just by the river ( you pay a small fee to the admin. like 3 euros ). The next day you can drive all the way up to the transfaragasan road. As soon as you get too the lake ( damm ), take the left road. We took the road on the right side, which is totally paved, but then made some miles on the other side, which is really nice offroad... gravel to mud :). There where some other enduristas as well.
Was alot of fun. On that side there is as well some nice wildcamping sites, which alot of romanians use. If u like too party go on weekends... if not try to avoid going on weekends :D.
I think with the versys you are going to bee fine, just stand up when it get too bumby.
And ask the locals for water fountains, they are everywhere... sometime at the road and sometimes hidden.

ask if I was too unpresice with the directions.. :D

here our blog from our journey (german)

You could start by looking at this thread at ADV Rider: Transylvania - Romanian escapes,on and off road - ADVrider, there should be some hints.

If that is not enough, have a look at Google Maps / Google Earth. There is enough to choose from, but sometimes they are not that obvious.

In general terms we have to remember that dirt roads in most countries are there to provide link between small villages, and as the countries get more money they put tarmac on them to make it easier for people to move around.

There are roads in Romania which are so bad that they are worse than gravel roads.....
