Cool Road tax (rovinieta) in Romania ?????

Hi I'm off to Romania in May and this was on the AA website;
''A road tax is levied on all motor vehicles both residents and visitors. Road tax ‘stickers’ are available from border crossing points, Petrol Stations and Post Offices in Romania. It is called a “rovinieta”. The cost depends on, emissions category and period of use in Romania. Foreign drivers failing to purchase a rovinieta during their stay may incur a fine between €90 and €2000 when leaving the country. Proof of insurance and the cars registration document is required when purchasing the rovinieta.''
Have not seen any mention of this in any books or guides.
Is the answer out there ? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It came in at the beginning 2005.

I am not clear whether motorcycles come under the charge. It also involves different cost depending on emissions.

The tourist rates are

1 day – 0.6 EURO

1 week – 3 EURO (respectively 2.4 and 1.8 EURO for vehicles observing pollution norms EURO 1.2)

1 month – 15 EURO (respectively 4.8 3.6)

6 months – 15 EURO (respectively 12 a 9 EURO)

We went to Romania on motorcycles in September 2005 and did not find out about this until after we left.

Better check out if bikes are required to have it.

I think Albania has something similar; they collect it at the boarder.

Dave - I was in Romania last summer. There's an office at the border post where you can buy it. We rode straight past it without buying it and weren't stopped, but I guess as its only a couple of Euros probably worth getting to avoid the chance of a fine if you're stopped.

Hi, from 1998 till 2007 I visited Romania every year. I had no time any problems with some "road tax". Forget it. Is it bull shit.
