Pyrenees

Hi, travelling from UK to stay in the Argeles Gazost area with my better half on the trusty Beemer this summer, can anyone give me some advice on the best roads/scenery etc in that area. Thanks

If travelling down through France from the Channel, quite easy to avoid the motorways & tolls by staying on the N roads.

There'a good campsite in St. Gaudens just short of the French Pyrenees & another couple in Spain I can recommend (Ainsa & Huesca).

Just about anywhere either side of the Pyrenees is worth visiting. If you want some easily manageable off roading, take the route from Tor in Spain in to Andorra. 20 miles max in a valley, small stream (at this time of year) to cross , then a couple of miles of uphill to a tarmac area for tourist coaches. Watch out for the cattle by the roadside though.

The Col du Tourmalet is the highest pass in the Pyrennes with some spectacular views. The French side is greener but, with more chance of rain too. Andorra is a tax free haven full of bike apparell shops catering to those bike crazed Spaniards. Lots of good deals to be had on helmets & leathers.

Sorry to nit-pick but the Col du Tourmalet at 2114m is NOT the highest pass in the Pyrenees. The Port d'Envalira at Andorra at 2407m takes the prize for the highest pass. I discovered this AFTER returning home last year from the Pyrenees. Rats!
