Over-wintering in Spain-Portugal

My plan is to spend Dec Jan Feb touring Spain and Portugal. Living cheaply, rough camping with the occasional treat of a warm bed.
Anybody have experience of this sort of thing?
I thought it would be interesting to ride down through France. Any info on the climate in S. Europe in winter months would be useful.

It is possible to live cheaply in Spain but rough camping is illegal and the police will move you on. Many of the campsites in the south are open all year and are reasonably priced. Further north and inland the nights are cold.

Hi

I spent a few weeks camping in the wild in Spain around this time last year - no problems - just keep out of sight and avoid the touristy places.

I heard about being moved on by the fuzz, but never had any trouble.

Also I noticed a few gypsies camping near one of my spots and they looked like they were settled in for winter.

I reckon you'd be OK as long as you didn't spend too much time in one place and kept a low profile and avoided tourist hotspots.

Have a good 'un
