Offroading in Slovenia

A sudden and unexpected three day window has opened for us next weekend, and we're thinking about going from Munich to Slovenia starting Saturday morning and returning back home Monday night. Since it's less than 400kms from Munich to the Slovenian border we should be there saturday late afternoon-ish and we'd have to leave monday noon-ish.

Any tipps and hints about interesting and great roads with lots and lots of gravel and dirt? We'll be riding two-up with full camping gear so it doesn't necessarily have to be "Road of Bones" style, but I also don't mind the occasional river/stream crossing. We'll be coming in from Austria, either Villach or Klagenfurt. Not sure whether we'll do the base-camp or the new day new campsite version, both would be fine.

Also looking for good campsites in this area. Any input will be greatly appreciated. :)

Camping Bled on the shores of Lake Bled (opposite end of lake to the town of Bled) is a well equipped site but may be very busy at this time of year. I'd push on a bit further to Lake Bohinj and stay there.

Thanks. Lake Bohinj actually looks pretty nice and isn't far from where we plan to enter Slovenia anyway, so we'll try to find a nice campsite there.

Any other advice?

I'm riding a Harley Road King so pure off-road adventures are a bit lost on me. What I do know is that the lowest classification of roads marked on maps in Slovenia are what is known as "White Roads". They are very basic and are constructed of compacted hard-core, hence the white. I don't know if that would be a bit tame for you or it might be an interesting way of linking together what pure off-road tracks you can find.
On reflection, Lake Bohinj is in the Triglav National Park so I don't know what their attitude or laws on off-roading are. When I was there any cars parked in the woods or on verges around the lake were being ticketed by mobile parking wardens. I think their offence was parking without the correct parking permit as opposed to parking in an illegal position.
Hope this helps.

We ended up on a small campsite in Trenta in the middle of the Triglav National Park. Since we only had one full day there we ended up exploring the area between Trenta and Bovec - very nice indeed.

Bit late but for anyones future reference from Eisenkappel in Austria, head over the Pulistattel Pass, then turn left off the tarmac and head towards Crna na Koreskem via Podosleva (note all spellings likely to be very wrong). Loads of no tarmac stuff around that area and not in a national park(second pic). Also more to ba had around maribor on the Pohorje range(first pic)

Ain't that road closed for motorbikes?

anagallis_arvensis 13 Aug 2009 11:49

the one along the pohorje maybe, I only saw a few bikes, the other one certainly isnt its a proper road just lacking tarmac.

well, this is my first post here on HU, so hello everyone! Im from Slovenia and my recommendation is:

- on the border with Italy or Austria there is a town Kranjska Gora. You drive to Mojstrana where you search for the Radovna or Vrata. Radovna is a small village sorrounded by mountains and a few kilometrs of fireroads goes through. There is also nice small lake where you can chill out. Then go for Pokljuka and to Bohinj. From Bohinj drive to Tolmin and to Kobarid. Ask for a village Sedlo,

and there is a 20 km of offroad with a beautiful landscape, but I think it is not for 2up

You can also PM me for any other infos. Or I will be happy to :mchappy: with you.

Best regards from Slovenia
