North West Scotland, camping
 

Going to Scotland camping next week if the weather is half decent:stormy:. Will be up in Southerland and wondered if anyone had any tips, idealy beach access with a 4x4 or just campsites on the coast. If you don't want to tell the world send me a PM. I have been before but in b&b - fancy the wild stuff though - minus 30 sleeping bag packed:funmeteryes:

There are a lot of good campsites up in Sutherland. One of my favourites is Clachtoll, a little North of Lochinver. It is nice and relaxed with all basic amentities and a friendly guy who runs it. It sits above a beautiful white sand beach. I'm pretty sure it's open year round but it'd be worth checking.
There is of course the famous Sandwood bay (wild camping) even further North but you have to walk a few miles to get to it, it's reckoned to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the UK. There is a landy track out to it but vehicles are prohibited.

I think wild camping sounds good this time of the year.

I'd checked too, most sites don't open untill easter - save that one for a summer trip. Suspect there won't be any problem just finding a good spot to camp wild.
There are quite a lot of recomendations on Wild Camping though it is mainly for motor homes. If I'm on my own I just wing it but with other folks along I thought i'd make a bit of a plan.

Often on my way north I stop in Peebles, a lovely town. I noticed a few years ago, soon after they changed the law, people wild camping alongside Meldon Burn just to the west. It looked like a great place to stop.

On the way up I was thinking of a spot by Lock Kennard (i think) on the road over to aberfeldy - fantastic views to the north east and the cairngorms.

There's a nice campsite in the Township of Ullapool, where the best fish 'n chips in the world are served-up - in the harbour area.

The scenery around that region, particularly northwards, is some of the best in the world too.

Thanks Keith, i've been to Ullapool before and it has a 'proper' fishing harbour feel. Your pics look like you had good weather - hope we'll be that lucky, who knows.

I think the whole area above ullapool is outstanding.

If you fancy Skye, the Glen Brittle campsite is pretty remote, friendly and cheap:

Plus haven't stayed here, but it's in the right area: Ullapool Self Catering Accommodation and Caravan & Camping Park

Also, if the weather's awful, have you thought about any of the independent hostels? This time of year, you'd probably have the place to yourself: Scottish Independent Hostels, youth hostel and backpackers accommodation in Scotland

I can see how the hairy bikers have done so well. Bikes, adventure, good food, throw in a good woman and there you have the makings of a fantastic life.:thumbup1:

Just reporting back. There are, as I suspected countless wild camping spots once you get above Ullapool. Just turn off the main road and it's easy to find somewhere to tuck in for the night. There aren't many opportunities to get a bike or car onto the beach and didn't find anywhere to spend the night, nor did I want to with the wind and rain (yes I know some people like rain). All the camp sites were closed untill easter. It realy is a beautifull place and well worth a visit.
