Non EU bike to Livorno. Italy

Does any one know if,, non EU bike arriving at an Italian port will be subject to "security deposit" like Bremerhaven, Germany?
Any feed back will be much appreciated.

Hello Joe, I have to admit that since I'm Italian I've never had to import a foreign bike here before!

I just read the article of Italian law which refers to temporary import from outside the EU. It says that you can import your bike for up to 6 months without any particular formalities or fees, as long as nobody else rides it other than you.

You can find the legal information in Italian at this link : http://www.portalenorm.it/DOCUMENTI/...%20pratica.pdf (the end of page one is the relevant bit)

I've, heard occasional horror stories on bike forums , and there appear to be some incompetent customs officers around, might be a good idea to print out that document just in case.

I'm sure you'll get more information here soon from people who know better...!

Feel free to PM me though if I can help with anything.

Ciao!

Bravo Giacomo ,,

I have also found this at the US embassy site ,, but also heard that to keep the vehicle for six months ,, you have to pay USD 1,200 outright,, not deposit. No VAT on vehicles over 6 months in possession or with over 6,000 KM ,,

Tourists may bring motor vehicles bearing non-Italian license plates for no longer than six (6) months without paying customs duties. At the expiration of this period the motor vehicle must be re-exported or registered and Italian license plates obtained. If it is not registered, the violator can be charged with smuggling and is subject to penalties.

I am 90% ,, sending the bike to Livorno ,, fly to Milano ,, drive down ,, pick up the bike ,, Villa Puccini to smell his air , wear the same style hat and listen to Mi Mi on my speakers,, then to Perugia, Ancona ,, Bari ,, ferry to Durres ,,Sofia ,, go see rtwdog ,, Bucarest ,, Odessa ,, then cross to Volgograd ,,Ufa ,, Omsk ,, Irkutsk ,,, Ulan Bator ,,, Khabavrosk ,, Vadivostok , back to Korea, to complete my RTW.

Last year drove straight through Italia ,,coming from Croatia via Trieste to Venezzia ,, then to Milano ,, Monte Carlo,, then to Spain.
Every time I am in your country ,, I become live ,, the sun ,,people ,, food,, the way you guys do things ,, Last year,, a very cute woman at an Autostrada toll booth,, threw me kisses and put her finger into her cheeks , smiling ,,,I kissed her hand as she gave me my change back. Thought of her all day long...
This time will do Italy ,, slowly.
;)

So now I know what I've been doing wrong all this time...! maybe I should get myself a Harley? :thumbup1:

I'm quite certain that there's no 1200 $ fee just for coming as a "tourist" to the EU.... The article (that you also quoted), says that you can temporarily import your bike "without particular formalities". That fee seems to be only if you plan to reside in Italy for 6 months, and I think it involves getting a temporary italian licence plate.
Might be worth asking the consulate for clarification though.

Anyone else around who's shipped into Italy?

Hello Joe,

first of all sorry for late reply.

I understand from your message that you enter in Italy as a tourist so we can issue a Customs docs for tourism valid 6 month.
To do that we need a copy of certificate of Title of the your bike (both front & rear), copy of your passport and copy of the insurance valid in italy.

Charges to be paid in Livorno (only by cash) are Eur 340,00 including Terminal Handling charge+Isps+Customs docs+Delivery order+our assistance to pick up the car.

At your disposal for any further info
