Italy - Greece Ferries
Could someone please enlighten me as to what facilities are available to passengers on board the Itlay-Greece-Italy ferries if travelling with a "Deck" class fare? Is there much competition for floor space for sleeping?

i have traveled from Venice to Igumenitsa in 2006 on a deck. it was cheap and ok. there is always a place to sit and sleep. no worry..

I sailed a couple of years ago from Igou to Bari. The cheapest ticket was I think, 60 euros for me and bike (or was that pounds?) > This meant sleeping on the open top deck. Tons of room. When the wind got up a bit, the white plastic deck chairs slid around, bouncing off the siderails like billiard balls. Good fun, and too light to hurt you if they hit you sleeping on the deck somewhere. Facilities? - none. Take a good camping mat - the next time I will also take some cardboard boxes, opened and flattened. It's a steel deck.

In future, I would take the ferry further north to Rimini or even Venice, because South Italy was horrible and trashy. I never want to see it again, personally.

I took Anek lines from Venice to Patras and back a couple of years ago....the way out was in full holiday season (mid august): No problem putting up my hammock on the deck....spent most of the trip in the pool...and even managed to find a shower somewhere on the ship ( don't know if it was for passengers or not...didn't bother to ask and just used it)

The way back 2 months later was kind of chilly at night....so we bedded down on the lovely soft carpet in the corridor of the first class section...noone seemed to notice let alone care.

Ferries from Ancona
Hi Happy New year and greets from Milan,

I personally prefer Ancona located in Central Italy 400 Km from Milan you save time 12 hours about from Ancona to Igoumentisa rather than 16 hours from Venice , the standard of these ships is pretty high, however Anek did not apply fuel surcharge. The best for punctuality is Superfast in imho

Traveled deck class to Greece a month or two ago. Easy, lots of options for the inventive and flexible. I asked and was told to sleep inside if I wanted, it being winter and all, but declined and had the whole upper deck to myself. Others camped in upper stairwells, where the carpet was remarkably plush. Do not know what this is like in summer, of course, since I slept near the swimming pool, hot tub and bar, all closed. Bring sleeping bag and mat, and think in terms of shelter from the wind.

BTW, I loved riding in S. Italy, so take all and every with large grain of salt.

I travelled Ancona to Igoumenitsa this summer and paid extra for the "airline style seat" which was a complete waste of money. It was so uncomfortable I ended up sleeping on the floor.

We did the deck thing from Igoumenitsa to Bari in September last year - we had plastic deck loungers (full length) onto which we put our mats and sleeping bags.....the only problem was the noise from the engines etc.....so remember to take your ear plugs and when it came to disembarking - it was absolute pandemonia.....all the staff had "gone missing" and it was every man for himself!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
