If I bring my motorcycle to Spain, can I leave the country for awhile without it?

I need to take my motorcycle to Spain to store at a friend's house for a few months. I will be entering Spain by ferry from Morocco. I will be buying a car in Spain and taking it to Mauritania (by ferry to Morocco, then driving to Mauritania) for vacation for a few months, then selling it in Mauritania and returning to Spain by plane. I will then get my motorcycle out of storage and take a ferry to Algeria, with my motorcycle.
I am worried that I will not be able to leave Spain without the motorcycle, when I try to leave by car. I left my motorcycle with a friend in Morocco once and the customs agents at the Casablanca airport told me I could not leave the country without my motorcycle.
Does Spain have the same policy? If so, what is the best way around it?

Thank you.

Many Brits (& other nationalities of course) have holiday homes here in Spain, some come over for a long break, drive in with their car loaded up... then fly home......... 6 months later they come back, fill the car with duty free fags and booze & drive back to the UK to get the car MOT'd again....

You should be OK, I cant see any problems with you doing that.

We spent the winter of '06-'07 in SW Spain. We had rented an apartment (with a garage for the bike) in the town of Rota. When our house in the USA burnt down on the first of February, '06, we just parked the bike in the garage, paid the landlord some money and told him we would be back as soon as possible, but it would probably be several months. We left Spain with no questions asked. The bike is not listed on our passports or registered in Spain (it still has a Washington state license plate on it). No officials in the EU have known how long it has been in any EU country. Leaving it in the EU has not been a problem (it's been there almost 2 years). In April of '06 we left it in Lisbon for 6 months, February of '07 we left it in Rota for 5 months and it is now in Amsterdam, where we will rejoin it in March (after a 4 month absence). We keep the license current and don't tell anybody official how long it has been there. This is for a USA bike and USA citizens, on a bike that was flown to Germany and ridden into Spain. Your experience may vary (but I doubt it).

No similar Carnet-countries policy in the EU. You'll be ok. However, the question would be clearer if you stated in which country the bike is registered.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
