Help in Norway - ice spikes
 

Hello everyone. I'm leaving for Norway for my first Krystall Rally in a few days and I will be in Oslo February 10th. I should mount the ice spikes on the tires of my bike and I'm looking for someone who can do this work for me. Someone of you know a garage who can do this job? Thank you.

I don't know if there are any places that will mount studs in your tyres (and I'm not sure if it's a smart thing to do).
You can get studded tyres in Oslo, right now it's not possible to go anywhere without studs and decent rubber.

The rubber compound as well as the tread pattern is important.
A very knobbly tire of the right rubber compond with spikes is what you need, there is no way we can predict what conditions you will meet, but this sort of combination will keep you upright and moving foreward on almost any surface.
I use Trelleborg Army with two spikes in each knobble on my R80 GS Basic, and today am having problems with new snow packing the treads, otherwise this tire is very good on ice and hard snow.

Just putting spikes in a tire will seldom give a reasonable result.
It's going to cost money to buy tires here, maybe they are cheaper in Italy, but you need proper tires.

The normal stud-size for road use is 1.5mm, if they are much longer they will be lethal on tarmac (and ilegal). XT-644 in the link from PeterGS is the most common tyre used.

Hi guys thank you everyone. Here some more details about my trip:I'll leave next Friday from home (Como, Italy) and ride across
Germany to Kiel to take the ferry to Oslo with a set of brand new Haidenau K60 Scout. One time in Oslo I need to put the spikes on my tires because "Best Grip" decides to support me and I have 120 spikes for every tyre (front mod. 1200 rear mod.1400) and they told me it's a good combination (hoping the weather turns better). I've written to Snellingen but they told me they have only studded tyres but they also give me the contact of a guy who can do the work and I'm waiting his answer.

P.S. Someone in Oslo or in the area like to share a beer?

When it comes to weather it will get warmer, and next weekend it might even rain in Oslo. But you will meet snow on your way to Krystall!

You have to tell how you find the spikes. They are realtive few and long, but it will probably be okay.
My gf have made some plans for next weekend, so I'm not sure if I'm in Oslo. Some beers would be nice, but you need a lot of Kroner :rofl:
