Greece

Howdy folks!

I'm planning a trip down to Greece through Monte Negro and Albania. The plan is to travel and have fun for few days through the Pindos mountains and to visit the nice country.

Can someone help me regarding Greece (i didn't had much look finding any informations about traveling with a enduro bike through Greece). I'm planning to travel as much as possible on gravel roads (macadams). Are there any safety issues (besides the regular trafic)?

Thanks in advance for any help. :-)

I went to Greece last year and really enjoyed it, the drivers and the roads were both ok (apart from in the wet, when the road surface acquired Teflon like qualities).

The most dangerous thing that I can remember are the dogs that seemed to be everywhere, big dogs, little dogs, packs of dogs. These dogs made a sport of chasing motorcycles, It wasn’t too bad if you could see them ahead of you, but sometimes they would be lying in wait at the side of the road, and just run out at you.

I like animals, particularly dogs. Normally, if I saw a dead dog at the side of the road I would be horrified, however in Greece, I saw so many dead dogs that it just became part of the day. I believe that the Greek government were trying to reduce the stray dog problem, in preparation for the many visitors expected for the forthcoming Olympic games.

I hope you have a good trip.

Regards

In France "macadam" refers to tar sealed roads. Is the use of this word different in the English language?

Hello SixDays02,

I am Greek and even I am more a road rider (Hornet 600), since 2 years now I have become an enduro lover as well after I rode at our local Enduro Rally from Thessaloniki to Halkidiki.

The good think about Greek mountains is that they have free access if you want to ride in the woods outside the roads. A lot of small villages are scatered around with usally friendly villagers and tasty food!!

Coming from Albania the areas around the following towns are famous for enduro and twisty roads: Florina, Kastoria, Grevena, Konitsa and Ioannina. Do not forget to visit the area of Zagorohoria. Amaising place. It is part of a National Park.

At Nimfaio near Kastoria there is out national Wild Brown Bear Center and Watch out of bears in their enviroment.
Ioannina and Kastoria are very interesting towns to spend a day or two.
From Konitsa there is beautiful very twist back road living the town and going south to Zakas and then Grevena. You can do that direction out of the road as well.

My self I organise (road) M/C tours but in Kastoria there is this company that does enduro tours and they will be able to give you more detailed info on enduro routes at that region. See at: www.enduroadventures.gr

best of luck with your trip!!!
If you come at Thessaloniki (Central Macedonia area)
give me a call to go for a beer :-)

The dogs suck...if you get bitten dont forget to visit a clinic for your rabbies shots. I took a Japanese tourist down from Meteora after dogs attacked him. The roads are made of Marble and when wet are very slippery. Otherwise fantastic.
