Germany-Austria-Italy-Swiss-Germany : tips needed
Hi there,

I am doing a 8 day trip thru these four countries. Here is how my plan has come up like

1. Land early morning in Frankfurt.
Ride to Passau : 440km away via A3

2. Ride to Mattighofen : have work here for 2 hours. Continue to Zel am see via Salzbug. 200km for the day

3. Zell am see - Lienz - Toblach - sella pass - Pordio pass - Arabba
210km for the day

4. Arabba - Rocca pietore - Pass fedala - Moena - Falcade - Predazzo - Pass manghen - foza - asiago
230km for the day

5. asiago - Folgoria - RIva del garda - bergamo
270km

6. Bergamo - livigno - bormio
240km

7. Bormio - stelvio - bregenz
250km

8. bregenz - frankfurt : 440km. Fly back via the evening flight to India.

total km : around 2300km.

Others who have been on this route, please advice. Am i missing out on anything.

I will be purchasing the austrian and swiss vigenette immediately

Your plan doesn't mention it so definitely go via the Grossglockner road/Heiligenblut on your way from Zell an See to Lienz.

If you're on a budget, there's a motorcycle friendly campsite at Fiames, just north of Cortina d'Ampezzo on the way to Arabba.

Think there's a youth hostel in Asiago, if not theres one in Bassano del Grappa. Stayed there about 3 years ago, cost about 25 euros I think.

Also a hostel in the old part of Riva del Garda. I've stayed here on 2 separate trips. Friendly staff who speak good English and you can leave your bike in their courtyard which is locked at night. Cost is about 20 euros (I think) including breakfast. Good food and drink in town too.

Also a hostel in Bergamo though you'll have to leave the bike parked on the street and some of the staff aren't the friendliest. It's cheap though at under 20 euros including breakfast.

Nice trip as planned. Kms per day should leave you enough time to enjoy the landscape I'll keep my fingers crossed for good weather.

Probably you won't be able to purchase the vignettes at Frankfurt airport or bike rental station, but the petrol stations near the borders offer the vignettes.

slight change in plans.. im landing in salzburg now

Salzburg - Zell am see - Lienze - Toblach - Sella pass - Pordio pass - Arabba - Falzarego pass - Cortina - Giau pass - Selva di Cadore - Rocca Pietore BL - Belluno - Venice - Trient (trento) - Tonale pass - Gavia pass - Stelvio pass - Innsbruck - Salzburg

Total distance : 1330, which will go to around 1500km i guess. That for 8 days means leasure!

this route also means i wont be entering swiss and hence saving on the motorcycle highway tax..

thx craig for the help on where to stay - really helpful!

You won't need the Vignette for Austria if you stay away from their Autobahns. They're usually numbered with an A-prefix, the road signs look like this:



The E14 and E5 are fine, A1 and A25 not. Other than that sounds like a great trip, enjoy your time and definitely take the Großglockner. You can get a daypass at the ÖAMTC-station in Zell am See (can't miss it, it's right on the main road through town)
