From Hamburg til Genova in january?
 

I was wondering if it would be feasable to ride to Tunisia and back in january going through europe from northern Germany to north Italy to catch the ferry to Tunis?

My concerns are:

Will I be stopped by snow on the way (e.g. passes) ?
Will the main roads be dangerous to drive if there is snow/frost?
Will it be too damn cold and unplesant?

I would like to hear if anyone did Tunisia and back in winther - i've read about people who did it in landys but that's another story.

I'm one of those that has done it in a Landy, but from UK.

This'll be my third year, first was from Marseille, second from Genova. Both trips we have seen a few bikes on German plates, so I guess others do it.

From Genova to Geneva, on the way home, the tempreture barely reached 2 degrees C. The roads were clear all of the way last year, this was around the 7th January when the big freeze had just passed over central Europe. We used the Mont Blanc tunnel.

In Switzerland all mayor streets should be passable all year thru for bikes without any problem beside freezing your a** off.

I live in Northern Germany. You never know at that time of the year how the weather and hence the road conditions will be the next day. If you are not in hurry you can try. If you get stuck in Northern Germany please contact me.

As Norberto says things can change quickly. I went to Bavria for the elefantentreffen end of January 2005 and the A75 motorway up through the middle of France was completely closed for days.

So you might be lucky but you´ll be luckier if you avoid high ground many alpine passes will be closed because.

follow th ewetaher forecasts and be flexible.

you can do it, yes it could be cold and a bit icy, but it will be fun. I ride my bike all winter in Switzerland, so dont worry too much just go.

if you come to Berne in January on your bike, you are invited for a hot shower, a warm bed, *gluehwein* and a good cheese fondue.

I've been in Tunisia on motorcycle for Christmas Holidays few years ago. I live in Genoa, so for me was quite easy to ride just to the ferry in 10 minutes from home.

As far as Tunisia in winter is concerned, we had some rain and fog but also some day of sunshine and 20 - 22 degrees. The minimum temperature we had was 6 degrees.

The problem for you is crossing the Alps in winter, your big enemy is the cold,
however if you are well equipped it should not be impossible. I do not know where you live in Germany but you could also reach Northern France and arriving to Marseille or Nice by train+moto in one night and then departing from those ports

If you're a real daredevil you can always give it a shot, but personally I wouldn't do it. Especially when going through the Alps it can get quite dangerous, aka snowy this time of year. Take a lot of time and be prepared to get stuck for a few days once you get to southern Germany.

And if you do get stuck around Munich contact me and we'll work something out ;)

Was just wondering if the driving condition are the same in Feb,
am planning to visit Venice and Berlin from the UK
