Enquiry (Entering Europe from Turkey & Greece).

Hi,

I’m planning on ridding my bike from Dubai to Europe in 2 weeks time, I will enter Europe through Turkey & Greece, Im riding a Harley Davidson Sportster with a Screaming Eagle mufflers which are little bit loud, do you guys think that I would have any problems at the borders because of loud exhaust sound?

It’s also my first Bike trip to Europe, any help and info on the weather and the road conditions will be really appreciated.

Thank you all
Hashim

Turn it off

When you get to the border, turn it off so it shouldn't be a problem. In Turkey they'll be more impressed by loud mufflers than not. Greece might be different, but I don't see a problem either. It's not the traffic police you deal with. And by the way, if they are homologated, don't worry. Even if they're not, shouldn't be too much trouble since the bike is not registered in the EU and thus doesn't have to comply with EU legislation.

Ever thought to cross TR BG SRB HR SI on your way north? If you wish to get weather info you should give more info on the period you wish to do it.

İf you come through Turkey, you wİll probably need to buy local insurance for about 20USD. the good thing is that you can then buy the Green Card insurance which they would want for Serbia. İts the only country that asked me for it

Hi Hashim,
don't worry about the exhaust, more about the weather... Remember, north of the Alps it will be autumn and cold, rainy and ugly... And soon snowing... I guess that you will have the perfect clothes for that... Otherwise I would recommend to enter via Italy (Ferry from Greece to Italy is not too expensive) and then you can move and decide where you want to go. DEfinately Spain and Portugal are now very nice and you can travel with low budget as it is low season everywhere...
Cheers
Rasmus

thanks for the replies, i have started the trip 5 days ago, it was really freezing in turkey, especiialy the way from ankara to istanbul, however the weather in istanbul was nice all the way to greece. iam in alxenderpolis now. i will move tommorow and head to italy. i hope i dont face the same weather again in the way.

Richless,

i did get the green card today and it cost around 80 euros for 15 days. you have to get if you will enter any EU countries.

Razmataz,
do u know if the ferries from greece to italy operate on a daily basis, can i be sure that i will get on a ferry on the same day i arrive? BTW, what are my options, which ports i can get to in italy and how much do you think they will cost?

Thanks,
Hashim

Loads of ferries from Igemenitsa, Greece, and yes travel the same day. Cheapest ticket is to Bari or Brindisi on the open top deck.
Watch out for Italian drivers who will pass you so close its a crime. I wanted to kill most of them. I HATE riding in Italy because of this.

They are not evil, just stupid.

Cool to hear Greece has good weather as I,m going there from Italy (Ancona) tomorrow (26 Oct) leaving Italy as the weather going North on the East coast has not been great. and all the camp sites are shut.

If you want a map of Italy then I,d gladly swap it for a guide book about Greece! Meet me ether Ancona docks 4pm (there are sailings every day 79euro upwards depending on what, if any accomodation you want) or Ignoumatis docks (sorry spelling not good) on the 27th Oct in the morning!

ps Got any top destiantions to stay in?

I can recommend "Il Centro" B&B:

Located in Ancona’s charming centre on a quiet pedestrianized street near the theatre and shops, 5minutes walking from the ferries, 20 minutes from the beach, with 3 bedrooms of different configurations and full access to all services this is the perfect B&B for anyone visiting Ancona (bike parking in the street seems quite safe)
