Croatia wild camping

I will be crossing tha croatian coast next week, following the adriatic, I have read on the internet that wild camping is forbidden in Croatia, has anyone do it ?

Any suggestions ?

Hey C,

I haven't heard of that rule so can't comment on that but I have free camped in a few spots. In general they are pretty tourist orientated so even if someone stumbled upon you, some quick talking with a foreign accent should allow you to avoid any real problems.

Some general comments are that it's a pretty rocky coast so you do have to look around a bit, but it depends on the area. It will be off season, so it'll mostly be only locals, not the hoards of tourists as in summer. You may want to consider following the signs to the designated camping areas as they would likely be pretty quiet, some may not be open this early though and if they are, you may be able to negotiate an early season rate. Hope that helps.

Hello Cocozz,

I have never heard that wild camping is illegal in Croatia. Until you don`t block road or try to camping in someones garden everything will be OK. Try to find some place that don˙t bother anyone and have a good time. If you would need any tip or aditional info just ask.

Wild camping is illegal in Croatia, and ignorance (or being foreign) will not save you from paying a hefty fine.

However there's no shortage of rocky secluded foresty beaches where noone will notice, let alone bother you.

Thanks you all for your advices,

This is how I'll do it, if I find any secure and hided spot which doesn't bother anyone I will put my tent there at night and leave very early.

That should be no problem at all. Tourist season is still far off, although there will be some easter visitors to the most touristic spots. Aside from those, you'll have most places to yourself. I've camped during this time, and in some places even at an official campsite (on Cres island, which even had working showers), I wasn't able to find anyone who wanted to be paid.....

I'm in Piran, Slovenia; just by the northwest croatian border let me know if I can be of any help.

One question maybe....

Do you know what may be the estimated time for going from Padova (Italy) to Zadar and going from Zadar to Dubrovnik ?

With NO highways :)

Hey there. I did pretty much that route about a week ago, and looking at the journal it took 4 days - taking it easy, day in Venice, no highways. A lot of fun! From Venice I followed the coast(ish) to Trieste and into Slovenia, where I stayed between Porto Ros and Piran, awesome place! Coast road in Croatia is great, and I wild camped on it once, beautiful scenery, locals didn't seem to mind, they were really friendly in fact! But yeah, worth hiding away from main road ;)

Have an awesome time, I really enjoyed that part of my trip - heading North now, love it!

4 days ! I have to do it in 2 days, :eek3:
Well, I have to say : following a 8-10 hours / day schedule on my bike :scooter:

Thank you for that info ! I am more and more impatient to go ! Where are you going north now ?

Haha, I like to think I'm more of an easy rider kinda guy, generally don't do big mile days, mainly because on a 600 bandit with the stock seat it gets real uncomfortable! But yeah, I dilly dallyed, took detours, so two days should be enough time :)

I'm at lake Bled at the moment, and heading for Vienna tomorrow - as long as it doesn't snow overnight, apparently there's a slight risk..

From Zadar to the Dubrovnik you will need about 6 hrs driving following coastal road, without any rush.

There are radars of course, but dont worry.. if you don´t get wild and keep speed more or less by speed limits, don´t worry.. Police is like in every other country..

cocozz 2 Apr 2010 10:44

Great to hear you, the comments I have read are really bad about croatian police on coast (overcoat at summer with tourists...).

But whathever, my bike will be full loaded and I'm not that kind of rider going hard on each curve. I would not be doing these trip otherwise :mchappy:
