CHEAP European hotel chains?
 

I often use cheap hotel chains in France like B&B and balladins

Are there similar chains that folks can recommend in Germany, Austria, Italy?

Given the exchange rates I can't afford 'luxury' hotels, so long as it's clean and has en-suite I'm happy as it is always a one night and move situation.

I have used the Etap hotels in Germany ( Accor Hotels : Choose your destination ) and they also have others through Europe.

Bear in mind though that the Accor Hotels link is just for Etap Hotels I think. If you use this link -

But part of their chain is this -

but they don't have en suite.

If you phone Accor and ask, they will send you two small (tankbag side pocket sized) brochures listing their Etap and Ibis hotels throughout Europe with prices, addresses, contact numbers, street plans, etc for each.

I have spent many months riding around the continent, and I always stay in hotels. However - I avoid chain hotels (Accor, etc.) like the plague.

If I want to spend an inexpensive night somewhere, I will head for a smaller village and look for a pension or perhaps a 'town pub' that also offers rooms. My experience has been that this is always less expensive (and far more pleasant) than any Accor-type hotel. An additional bonus is that the security available for my motorcycle is also much better - usually I just roll it around to the back of the building and it is out of everyone's sight.

In southern Germany, in the Black Forest region, there are many hotels that cater specifically to the motorcycle community, they are usually inexpensive.

I agree that it is better to go to town pubs and small private hotels. Only problem is that I am booking for a group of 6 people this year so that can be problematic.

When on my own I do do what you suggest or just ride into the woods and throw up the tent but group travel with people who have an aversion to canvas and 'winging it' means booking ahead with all the associated grief and timetables that must be set and met.

Go to the BMF website, look up the touring section and click on the MoHo hotels, they're motorcycle friendly, usually having a (limited) sheltered garaging, we've used them and they're good, but not necessarily cheap.
