camping slovakia and romania
 

hello hello. Im planning to head to slovakia and romania in august.

Could people advise me on campsites availability, wild camping and other cheap approriate places to stay in both countries. and where not to stay..

anywhere where there are bears- seriously- check where you are going is there are any- these animals are real and dangerous-

i previously read a post that mentioned a good campsite near Sibiu, Romania ( near Transfargan Highway) . I am heading off on a tour on Friday and will be camping in Slovakia and Romania. I will try and let you know if i find any good campsites and wild camp places. Andy

I went to a rally last year in Slovakia, it was held at a campsite that had a really good feel to it. It was called Camping Dubnik in Stara Tura about half way between Bratislava and Zilina.

I am writing this presuming you will be on wheels and touring.
I have only stayed in one campsite in Slovakia and that was on the northside of a big lake East of Michalovce in East Slovakia,which would be handy if your going via Ukraine to Romania.It was ok but swimming pool gets quite busy with locals.
If you're cutting through Hungary;In May I was touring a bit of East Slovakia and just nipped into Hungary,back on the Slovakian side I got talking to a young Slovakian lad who reccomended a biker friendly campsite/pension in a place called Svilvasvarad in Hungary(west of Miskolc)run by a biker couple.www.magyarroute66.hu
Campsites in Slovakia are a bit thin on the ground compared to say France or Austria where you are spoilt for choice.
If you find yourself in central Slovakia about mid August,I hope to be at my house there then.So you are welcome to pitch there on your way through,just PM me and I will give you details.
Not sure about wild camping but as with everywhere if it's remote and hidden enough go for it but you may end up spending the same on fuel as you would for camping trying to find that place.You'll be surprised where locals pop up.
As for Bears,Slovakia does have them but not in the same numbers as Romania.Wild boar would be the most likely thing to come snuffling around the tent in the night which would be enough to freak me out !:eek3:

Free camp! Campsites aren't that easy to come by, some places, such as the fabulous Sighisoara (where Vlad Tepes did his impaling) in Transylvania had houses opening up their gardens for tents, esp during the music festival, which is brilliant (and free) and the beers are good too! Right by Bran Castle there is a great campsite that's bike friendly, with the best showers/washing facilites, but it don't come cheap! The local supermarket (called "Wolf") has food n beer a-plenty. In Romania there were some areas where there just wasn't any decent coverage, so we did spend a lot of time trying to find a decent spot.

I did have an amusing tick incident whilst free-camping and tick-bourne encepalitis is quite common, esp in the summer months, so maybe get the jab for it (I didn't and then crapped my pants for ages about it!) Also, see above - BOARS! Had a biggun hurtling past the tent, scary, but they're prob more worried about us humans eating them, than them harming us, but it did keep us on our toes after that - that one was free camping in a field - it's these things that you remember!

I'd also look at Slovenia, as it's just GORGEOUS - best campsite ever:Kamp Vili Volarje in Tolmin.

Vampire camping in Bran (mentioned above) is very well run - Vampire Camping

But wild camping is fairly accepted - but do watch out for the ticks!

Entering Romania in from the north-west, there is a camp site in the village of Sapinta. Very basic, but still OK for RO. At Timisoara I found a better equipped camp site, but also more expensive.

Mostly I camped in the bush or grassy plains of the mountain passes. Never had any negative experience so far.

You'll find cheap accommodation if you look for private rooms. They are mostly basic, but were always clean. When weather turns bad I prefer to resort to roofed accommodation :innocent:

I passed through Romania and Slovakia a few weeks ago, recommend:

In Slovakia: campsites hard to find, some are signposted without actually existing. In Dedinky there is an excellent little pension, can't remember the name of it but it's signposted from the main square, cheap and friednly run by Josef who is a real character.

In Romania: Pension Gentiana in Vatra Dornei, again signposted off the main road and up a gravel road (decent enough), either take a room or you can camp in the garden with full use of facilities.

Just south of Sibiu, Cisnadoara campsite (signposted from Cisnadie) is clean with a free kitchen including fridge!

You can sometimes find a campside but "privats" (room with shared facilities often also including kitchen and living room) are more frequent in this wonderful country.

People are very welcome so maybe if you ask you can camp in their garden/field. Only problem is that it is difficult to find anybody who speaks english outside towns...

hi,
name mike englishman living in brasov romania this close to draculars castle.
most of the campsites are basic but clean. the general rule is if land has a fence around it it is considered private but as you will find many areas just of the road are open and can be used but you will have no facitities.
can not send you a private message as have just joined and need 8 posted.
there is an exellent campsite where we are with little cabens if the weather is bad, however you are more then welcome to a stopover at our house where you can give your bike a bit of a service have all the tools or can do it for you. can advise on some good routes and may join you for a ride. you can expext a good meal, comfy room and you can have you washing done.
if forest roads and moutain camping is your thing this is the place.
we have an open house for bikers and our friend Luc from belgium as just left this his third year of visits.

Please let me know when you will come to Slovakia and from which direction. I will recomend you reasonable accomodation along your route thru SK and also itinerary. If your trip will be during a weekend I can join your group and make you a guide for weekend. :thumbup1::welcome:
