Buying a 250 in turkey
 

I'm riding rtw and want my girlfriend to join me for a section across Europe, starting in Turkey. She'd like something similar to an XT250.

Is it reasonable to assume that once there we'd be able to find something second hand that would suit?

We're flexible in terms of model, and won't be doing any major mods to the bike.

Any other suggestions? Maybe buying a new one, which we'd then sell in Spain or somewhere.

Any reason for specifically wanting an XT250?
Your question may be better answered if you list her requirements.
I have an XT225 and it's not an ideal tourer unless you have lots of time, plan to ride off road and have short legs!

You might find that trying to sell a bike registered outside the EU as anything other than scrap , could turn out to be rather hopeless, sorry to sound negative. As far as Italy goes, an extra-EU vehicle can only be registered if it corresponds exactly to a model/ type which was approved by some EU body. This usually means contacting the manufacturer directly and the paperwork required is far from cheap.
I doubt that spain is much different and unless we were dealing with a bike that was particularly collectable then I doubt any local buyer would be interested.

That sums it up - she's 5'2", new to biking, we plan on going on some easy off road, and generally avoiding highways. She wants a bike thats short and light weight.

Why not buy a bike in Germany, get export plates and ride it to wherever it pleases you? Don´t know if the XT250 is/was a common bike in these parts, though.

If you can find the bike and buy it, will be headache in Turkey to licence it on you/gf.

Taking it out of Turkey will be a hard job... (carnet, greencard, taxes, etc.)

I'm 5'2 but have a 29" inside leg - it's that which counts.

If you're not doing anything difficult then almost any small bike would be fine with the right tyres and attitude -there's a HU woman touring on a VanVan & there's plenty of owners of Honda C90's here too. Think small but expand the search.
You may think 100-125ccs is too slow but the Serow is happiest below 50mph (70kmh) and any small cc bike would do that.

I don't know the rules about buying a bike in Turkey but unless there is a specific reason to visit Turkey, perhaps keep to countries of the EU where there are no border crossings?
Be sure you can buy insurance and that your travel insurance covers riding a motorcycle abroad too :)
