Breakdown cover for old bikes
 

Hi I am trying to get some breakdown cover to cover my 1982 BMW for a trip to Romania.
Most company's do not cover bikes of this age.
Any one know of a company that will cover a 30 year old bike for a Europe trip.

I still need to check with ADAC I cant find any terms and conditions in English online.
Has any one used ADAC for older vehicle

Try Carole Nash, they weren't bothered about extending their recovery policy to my MZ, although to be honest I was trying to get the price down not get the cover.

Be careful though. Breakdown cover is insurance. They are now in the habit of coming up with stupid figures for recovery. According to the RAC the total cost of getting a Moto Guzzi from Eastern Germany to Redditch (I think it was) is over £5000. The bike is worth £1200 (in it's current condition) according to their assessors, so they wanted to scrap it locally and give the owner the a full price air ticket, a couple of nights in a hotel and enough cash to buy a sandwich at Schipol. I've had one where the AA wanted to scrap a 3-year old Enfield in Dublin rather than recover it to mid-Wales. You can fight these decisions but from a hotel room in a town you've never heard of it isn't fun.

For the cost of five years premium, if the worst happened you could hire a van in Romania, drive both ways and fly home, or DHL the wreck, or get it to the local BMW dealer (from Germany East they don't worry if it's not an R1350GSST Touring). If it doesn't break you have the cash.

Can your credit card take the strain in the short term or would you rather just hand your keys to the In-sewer-ants and walk away?

I'll go with that. A story that I will try and make short.

A friend of mine bike broke down in Hungary. Call for cover to bring it home. Wait we will ring you back. The book price on the bike is £2,500. You have an excess of £500. We will pay you the £2k and a ticket home plus £50 a day for the out standing day's until the flight. Mate had to take it or leave it. So got it in to a bike club store for next to nothing. Flys home. Get a trailer off of the bike club he is in. Takes his car and trailer over. Picks up bike and brings it back. Gets bike fixed in UK. Ring's insurance company and told them what he had done, and can he have the V5 back. Yes Sir you want to buy the bike back. We will give you a price. £3k sir if you want the V5.
You can guess the rest. Any way the bike is his now, And he is well out of pocket.
