Wire Mesh Light Guards

Are wire headlamp guards road legal in the UK?

Thanks

I've no idea whether there is a specific prohibition on them but I'd guess not. I suspect you're more likely to attract attention if there are jagged edges left to cause (even more) injuries if you hit someone.
No one has bothered with mine for the last 10 yrs, including MOT examiners, but no stones have put it to the test either (although I don't put myself in the position of being "roosted" by the bike in front)

Basically.....YES!

Had them on a Tenere XTZ 750 and passed MOT OK.
mine were home made with a "bullbar" affair round them.......... basically as previously mentione, as long as nowt sharp to hurt anyone, its ok. and as long as I believe 95% of light is transferred.... ( but how they measure this i dont know)

if they are like the bullbar "kid-killers" a lot of 4WDs have, then they are ok to put on.
it wouldnt pass the building and use regulations to make and sell a new car/bike with them on, but once its yours then you are free to do what you like.
with the headlight on you cant see the grill over the lens anyway, i guess its a common sense thing, if you block the light the MoT tester will fail you.

Thanks for the info on this, I've been thinking about putting wire mesh guard's around my headlamps.

Attach them in such a way that it is very easy to clean your lights. This means they need to be easily detached or at least hinged so you can get a sponge or squeegee in behind them. Otherwise your headlights will get plastered with bugs and you will wonder why you can't see.

Sez I. YMMV.
