Fuel Filter/Water Separator...

Hey everybody,

Just wondering what kind of fuel filter people can recommend. Something thats field maintanable, like those ones with the cleanable elements and see-through bodies. I have come across a combo fuel filter/water separator but I don't know if its made for motorcycles, here is the link:

It's designed for marine applications, where water is a big problem. For bikes. not so important.

I just use a good plastic fuel filter made for auto use. Cheap and effective. If it clogs full - and I have never seen one do that - you can toss it temporarily and run without. Assuming you have cut your lines so that you can...

I replace mine every 5 years or so. Still looks clean...

Many (not all) OEM motorcycle fuel filters have an equivalent automobile part number. If you have, for example, a Honda motorcycle, you might find that an identical fuel filter is also carried by Honda automotive dealerships, although it will almost certainly have a different part number. Check with owners groups for your motorcycle type, or check with your dealer.

I think your only filtration concern would be particulate matter. Water tends to settle to the bottom of fuel tanks, and most bikes have a slight sump in the tank to trap water and prevent it from being taken into the fuel inlet tube. Fungal and bacterial growth are a concern in diesel fuel, but not with gasoline.

If you get caught in a pinch, with a plugged inline type fuel filter, you could replace the unit on your motorcycle with any inline automotive gasoline fuel filter that would physically fit.

And when the filter is cloged... and you can not run without it.....

Detach it, attach the feed line to the filter-exit, let it "spill" some fuel, put your thumb on the exit, shake it a bit and let it "spill" some fuel again.
Detach and attach in the correct manner.
Now the filter is good for an other 10.000 Km. Ofcourse a new one would be better

K&N makes a great fuel filter machined from billet aluminum that filters down to 10 microns. You just open it and clean it without replacing anything. It will basically outlast your bike. They have small versions for motorcycles and ATV. Check their website.

Some bikes have a small bowl built into the bottom of the fuel tap assembly to catch any water that may be present in the fuel.
Any filter that has The inlet and outlet at the top of the filter will provide some measure of separation as fuel is lighter than water and the water will fall towards the bottom of the filter.
