Tires

I need to put new tires on my KLR650 for a trip to Mexico. Mostly off road (Copper Canyon) but some highway as well to get there. Also, will be using the bike mostly highway upon return to Chicago. Any recommondations? Currently I have the stock Dunlops on.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I'll be trailering to El Paso due to the weather here and tire situation any way. What are the Pirelli MT21's like?

I'd recommend a set of street tires for the run down, swapping to say Pirelli MT21's at a dealer near the border, get him to hold them for you, then swap back on the return. A few thousand off road in Mexico on knobbies or near knobbies and they'll be about done. Cheaper in the long run.
Try and do the round trip on anything but a pure street tire, and you'll have slicks by the time you get back, and half or more worn out in Mexico, so not much fun there.

A good choice are also Michelin's T63 - slightly more road-apt than MT 21 but good enough for offroad driving - same tread pattern as Desert ..on road ,driving with care, lasted more than 7000 Kms on my XT's
