Caribou Luggage System

Hi everybody,

Well I've managed to convince my other half that it is a good idea to travel across to Australia mid next year by motorbike. Now comes trying to work out everything that you need! I have had a good look around for luggage, to begin with I was going to go with the aluminium panniers but they worked out a bit expensive and that is when I stumbled across the Caribou system which seems to have everything I need. The only problem is is that I can't see a decent picture that shows the luggage on the bike so I can work out how my girlfriend is going to fit on. I just want to check that the luggage doesn't make it uncomfortable for her on the back.

So what I guess I am after is for are any pictures of bikes with the Caribou system on taken from the side so that I can see how it fits with the rest of the bike. (We are planning to use a DL650). Any other information on the system from folk that have used it would also be great.

Hi Chris. I'm quite sure that you will not have any problem. I have them on a DL1000 and they are designed to not interfere with the passenger when mounted. They work well and would recommend them. If you can't find a pic at the caribou site or on the strom user sites, I can dig one out for you. Cheers.

Thanks for that Mountain Man, I completely forgot about looking on the Strom sites and yep there are pictures. Seems they are a really good setup, now I just have to think about the cost (got to get them shipped over to Scotland) but I think they are the way to go

the only thing that has put me off the caribou cases is their system doesnt work with toploading cases

Yeah, I was OK about that (my girlfriend isn't) but the thing that attracted me to the system is the overall system. I have only read good reviews about the rack system with people saying that it is strong and well built (I believe it is made of steel which will mean it will be easier to have repaired whilst on the road). The luggage itself seems pretty rugged and waterproof, they don't look that flash which can only be a good thing and even after shipping and import tax I am pretty sure they will be cheaper or on a level with aluminium boxes. I was also thinking ..... can't you get fabric bag inserts for this luggage?

The good thing though is that I haven't ordered the system yet so I would be really interested if anyone has any opinions, it is a big bit of cash to throw at what I think must be quite an important part of the overall system so review, review, review

I have pelican cases mounted to SW Motech racks on my V-strom. This is a cheaper solution than Caribou but probably not as functional. You can check out pics on Twisted Throttle. You will be able to get the racks in the UK and then mount the pelicans on them. The bags are then not really quick release as you have to undo 4 screws to get them off. Removal takes less than a minute. The rack is about $200 dlls and the bags about $120 dlls each. Much cheaper than the Caribou system. If you look around on the web you can find pics of people that have mounted the 1440 top loading cases. I went for the bigger 1550 which are side loading which means they are very difficult to load unless off the bike. I haven't really used them yet except for a weekend trip and a few day trips. They are totally waterproof.

Revitalising an old thread...

I'm looking to put some Caribou/Pelican cases on my 2008 Tenere, and got an email from Caribou saying they now make a mounting kit/case combo to fit racks by SW Motech and Givi (presumably for bikes that they don't do their own rack for, or already have those rack on their bikes) - the mounting system is similar to their own rack - a lockable quick release handle.

If anyone has this system fitted to their bike I'd be interested to hear their opinions as to robustness of the system?
