Spacers for DR350S soft luggage

I've bought a Suzuki DR350S for solo travel in addition to my Tenere (we use the Tenere two-up) and some solo offroad fun. Since weight is an issue here I'd rather not get a full luggage rack for my ARD cases that weigh in at about 5kg each. Instead I'll stick with soft luggage and am going to revive my old Held saddlebags.

The only question is how to keep them from melting the rear plastic cover on the exhaust on the right side and from breaking the one on the left. I'd probably need some sort of spacer - any ideas? I should also mention that I would like to keep costs down so I'd prefer to build it myself if that's possible. I've read the entire "make your own luggage rack" thread but a full luggage rack is a bit overkill methinks. Something lightweight and simple should suffice.

You could maybe make something like this:

DR650 Side Luggage Racks, Rear Plastic Guards, DR 650 - eBay (item 110635761536 end time Feb-12-11 10:43:58 PST)
