Yup, that would be the mechanically correct way to design how fuel canisters should be mounted, but... reality with time and money always come into the picture.

Maybe someone can design that and market it to the traveler crowd...

I found that plastic jerrycans (albeit 25 litre ones on a landcruiser) wore through surprisingly quickly on dirt roads, which suggests if you are using them you're better off with cheap ones.
