Egypt XT600: spares & tires

Hello, I'm planning a trip for the spring/summer of 2011. We want to get to Egypt through Turkey, Syria and Jordan. I'm driving a XT600Z 3AJ (the double headlight tenere) and wonder what would be the best choice in taking spares and tires. I have no idea about road conditions on the way, and in summer it'll probably be too hot for going into the sahara when we're in Egypt.

So what kind of tyres are suitable for such a trip? Preferably without making tire changes.

And what kind of spares should I take for my XT? I already made a little list, am I missing something essential?

- ignition coil
- rectifier
- sparkplugs
- spokes
- clutch cable
- piece of drivechain
- chaingrease
- oil
- oil filter
- air filter
- tubing (for fuel and fuelpump vacuum)
- lightbulbs
- wiring for electrical + plugs
- cable ties and tape
- some gaskets?

I'm changing brakedisks just before I leave, brakepads, and degass the lines. Also changing sprockets and chain, oil, oil filter and air filter. And of course a new set of tires.

It is possible to do the whole trip on tarmac so if you don't plan to go dune bashing use a long lasting road biased tyre like Avon distanzias, I got some good used tyres through the community in Cairo a few years ago.
Oil is available there so just take a little for topping up and a couple of spare filters. With new chain/sprockets and brakes fitted they should last the distance.

Thanks for the replys. The bike's got 50K at the moment. I'm measuring oil use now but it seems to be allright. If it turns out to use more than a litre to 1000-1200km I'm planning on changing the piston rings. I overhauled the cylidner head roughly 2000km ago.

I would like to do some offroading as well, so maybe some tires that can handle a bit of both. I'm not planning to get into the dunes because of the heat in mid summer. But if I feel lucky maybe I can get some tires in Egypt as you said. How'd you get them, just posted something on the HUBB?

Cheers, and thanks again
