Acerbis 25lt tank on a DR650, fitting problems

Hi all,
My first post, be gentle!I am having another DR650 built; the previous one was nicked, it and all my gear and I thought of the Ascebis 25 lt instead of the 30lt Safari I ran before. However, I am reading many post on other sites of fitting problems re oil cooler, turn signals and the tank,'moving around', not braced and a bunch of other issues with petcocks. Further, the tank; given its design, is 'nose heavy' when full, then there's the fork seal issue. My 30lt had none of that other than the size and weight issue. Anyone experienced any of the above?

Thanks for your input, oh, by the way the H.U. get together in. Boonah Australia; another first for me, was a hoot. I actually met people who's opinions were based on actual experience instead of imaginitive conjecture!

As you probably know, Acerbis make TWO fuel tanks for the DR650.
I don't own either but I do read some of the forums and get some info there. I'm using the old IMS 4.9 US gallon tank ... actually holds 5.2 gal.

AFAIK, the smaller Acerbis tank has no problems ... but you being Aussie, I'm sure you'll want the big Crockadile Dundee version .... 6 gallon or so? But if the Safari works best ... USE IT. We don't buy them as way too expensive here. I can go
230 miles (about 370 km) all in on my IMS, including reserve. Fine for USA and Mexico. Once in a Blue Moon I carry a
1 gallon (3.8 l) jug strapped on, but RARE.

I would go onto the DRriders forum and ask for help on fitting your tank. Several Aussie and Kiwi DR owners there with lots of knowledge on DR650's. Most run Safari ... as you do.

ADV Rider's BIG DR650 thread (in thumpers forum) also will have volumes of
info on this, Aussies there too.

Far as I know, the problems you site on the big Acerbis tank are ALL solvable
with a few mods.

Look to PRO CYCLE in Oregon, USA for solutions to fitting that tank.

THAT Safari 30 ltr tank!

Hello to all and 'rubber to the road or dirt' whatever your preference for 2020!
Since my last post; a long time, certain personal frame problems (spine etc) have stopped any adventuring on my fully equipped DR650. The bike was fitted with a Safari 30 ltd tank in October 2017 with an almost total rebuild and has 1,700kms to date and yes, it may be for sale. My issue is with tank. In order to check the spark plugs it has to be removed; common knowledge, putting in back on is, for me at least....... a nightmare on steroids!
I have scanned the web and have read numerous ways others have found to put a $A 650 tank back on the motorcycle it is supposed to fit. It doesn't fit you HAVE to make the damm thing fit. I have contacted Aqualine Inds in Australia and while they are pleasant enough, replacing the original crossbrace, which was two piece component with the 'newer single piece brace and offered to replace the pathetic soft foam material used under the tank and cross brace. I asked why such feeble material was used and all I got was the corperate run around.
After two hours today when suicide was an option I thought that perhaps the 'bungs on either side of the frame on which the OEM tank sits are too large in diameter. After I started the bike after a long while I heard a vibration coming from the egine area, turns out the cross brace was resting on the top engine fin. AGH! (have photos)
The build was done by a'reputable' dealer in Australia. Plastic electrical ties to secure the fule lines to the carb and fuel petcock seems to be even for me: I'm no mechanic, a bad choice.
So, after this bleat I ask; has anyone used the ASCERBIS tank on a DR650 or the smaller capacity SAFARI tanks the emphasis on the removal and reinstalling?
I am not prepared to spends hours trying to 'adapt' such an expensive petrol tank to MAKE it fit, not for $A650 at least.
Thanks for reading; if you didn't bale out after the first paragraph!
Be safe and 'damn the torpedoes'!

I didn't bale out on your post, but it's not clear to me what you are doing.

Are you wondering which tank to use to replace the big Safari?

I don't have the smaller Safari or the Acerbis so I can't help you there. I do have the useful 5 gal IMS tank which fits the bike with no modification and is easy to remove/refit.

If you go to the big DR650 thread on ADVRider you will find lots of helpful people who have used all 3 of the tanks you are asking about.

Good luck.............shu

Hi Shu,
Wanting to know if anyone has fitted a 25ltr ACERBIS tank to their DR650, I have the SAFARI which will be sold. I also have replaced the OEM indicators for smaller ones to alleviate the flashers connecting to the tank at full lock.
Thanks
