12v Socket on an XR650R - How ???
Hi guys, im taking an XR650R around South America and i want to fit 12V socket to power a Garmin Quest GPS and maybe other things. As the XR doesnt have a battery, hows the best way to do this ?? WIll the generator be able to handle it and will the AC current mess it up at all ?
All info will be gratefully recieved Cheers, Ed |
You will at least need a higher output lighting type affair. One source I know of for these is trailtech, out of Washington. I think their website is trailtech.net
You'll probably have to buy a heavier flywheel and the 12v output pick-up bits, and I'm not sure if that power, primarily intended to run a headlight, will power a GPS reliably. You may want to consider mounting a small 12v gel type battery with a small solar charger. |

The GPS takes little power - a few watts. If you plan on adding significant loads then the answer changes. For the GPS you will need well regulated DC, so first - a fuse, then a rectifier and a capacitor and then a regulator. Note that it will only work while the bike is running - what the GPS will do when the bike stalls ... well I don't know - it may loose the track info, it may start up in some default mode that you don't like .. that bit is up to you. I'd suggest you find out before you do too much work. |
