Touratech zega cases system

Hello, I found a used aluminium zega case system for my 1150 gs, 35 liter. Any body knows how they resist a fall??

I don't know if it was meant this way by Touratech, but I have been told that the cases normally get ripped off the bike. This is good and bad, since there's less to injure you on your cartwheeling bike. But it also means that you might get hit by a pannier, and that you have to repair the box mountings "in the field". FWIW, I think I'll go with the TTech system, but I will make a few alterations (like bonding a 4mm aluminium sheet to the back of each pannier, and using stainless bolts not self-tapping screws.)

HTH - note that I haven't personally used this setup yet, but I'm also looking into it.

I would say it's more suited to an adventure touring bike (like a big GS) than to a real offroader like a KTM or a Honda XR. I think you'll have all sorts of other things to worry about if you crash your GS

Mine survived a fairly heavy fall with only slightly bent frames and scuffs. I'm still using them without any repairs, although one of the plastic mounting bits is also slightly damaged.

However, my friend just caught one of his on the bumper of a bus in very slow traffic and it made a right royal mess of the pannier and mounts. Bolts rather than the standard self tappers would probably have made things worse as the pannier wouldn't have been able to pop off.

At the end of the day, they're fairly thin aluminium which compromises the strength, but I feel the light weight more than makes up for this.

On a big GS, if you damage them too much to repair you're probably going to have lost interest in the bike too!

Hi guys

Depending on how you fall, they will break off from the plastic mounts. They also loosen if your ride over corrugations after a while. The other downside if you don't get them powder coated, you get a metal residue on your hands luggage etc.

As a pannier they are very well made and take alot of punishment, I would personally get a different rack made if you can afford to. especially if you can get one that just unlocks from the bike. The touratech catchs are also quite easily prised open. There are better catches/locks on the market.

Best of luck if you get a reply from Bernard Tech as I have speken to a number of people whoi have requested info etc and he has not replied just as with Jesse boxes too.

I've also got these panniers and am interested in the better locks and catches that you mention. Do you know a supplier / URL?

Cheers Andy.

Ernie at Overland Solutions can supply improved catches for the Zega cases. Much more heavy duty. ?? about the price though.
