Hi Dan. Im no 1988 model tenere expert but what is your buying criteria. IF you want a 88 tenere then the add sounds good and would give the owner a call. All bikes have there faults and failings, some might be gears others electrics or fuel pumps but all solvable. This time round I wanted a 600 well big single, preferably a xt but as late a model as I could afford with rwc or in that condition prefer an electric start and ended up with a 1998 model xt600 with a 1999 model tt600 motor. Cost $1700 in rwc condition but no electric start. Mind you I was also looking at dr's, xr's and very tempted in a late 80's klr with the large tank.
Now personally looking at the add and doing the money conversions if that was for sale here and was looking for a bike then I would give the owner a call and view if possible. If the tank was sound then i would make a bid. Why because that model is something I would like and would fix what it needs. Even if I didnt need it I would most likely make a bid anyway.
Cheers Ernie.

Hi Ernie, and thanks for your response, my buying criteria is quite simple, get an xt600 tenere with electric start for less than £2000, overhaul it for less than £500 ready for a rtw trip in 2013, with another £500 for spares and additional items, (panniers, sat nav maybe a UD fork and a new rear shock)
It's a bit early for buying the bike, but this is exactly the type of bike I am after, I've been looking for a few weeks now and this would appear to be the first viable machine I have seen.
I don't think I'll be bidding, I'll just watch the bike to see what price it goes for, so that I have a good idea of what I'm going to end up with, if I was within 12 months of the start of the trip, then yes I would certainly be considering putting an offer in.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
