Schuberth C3 Pro Helmet - Quiet With All Windscreens?

I'm tired of the excessive wind noise with my current (KBC) modular helmet, even with ear plugs. I'm considering the purchase of a Schuberth C3 Pro due to its claimed and (reviewed) extreme quietness.

However, my research tells me that otherwise quiet helmets can turn out to be noisy when paired with some windscreens. I don't know if that's the case with the Schuberth. I have a 650 V-Strom with the Suzuki touring screen (i.e. the vario type with an adjustable airfoil).

The Schuberth is very pricey so it would be a shame to buy one and find out that it doesn't work for me. I do prefer a modular type helmet (flip up).

So, has anyone found that the Schuberth C3 Pro (or the less expensive C3 model) is noisy with the V-Strom touring screen, or in fact with any windscreen?

Thanks for any feedback.

Well - besides Arai XD3's own the Schuberth C3 and Schuberth C3 Pro and very happy with them riding mostly a Ducati Multistrada 1200S Pikes Peak (2012) with a short carbon screen and Jialing JH600 with medium high screens.
Schuberth C3 and C3 Pro, worth every penny in my personal opinion, quietest helmets ever owned and worn and brilliant for touring. Get the SRC Bluetooth System - works great for phone calls and listening to music on long rides.....

I have a C3 and it is pretty quiet.

BUT... I found out the reason that it's so quiet is mainly because of the chin curtain that surrounds your upper neck below your chin. I wasn't getting enough airflow because of my windshield, and it was getting very hot and stuffy in the helmet so I had to remove the chin curtain. Without it, it's no less noisier or quieter than any other helmet.

Thanks to all for the feedback, and particularly about the apparent role of the chin curtain in suppressing noise.

A knowledgeable sales guy at a Schuberth dealer was quite forthright in pointing to the extra sealing that the helmet liner provides as the main factor in making it quiet and it was obvious that extent of the liner was a major part what set it apart from other brands.

I tried one on and found that there was excessive pressure in the forehead area. Online research tells me that this is a frequent complaint. Heads vary in shape. Going up a size made the fit overly loose but, oddly, still retained the forehead pressure. A different dealer suggested compressing or shaving some of the structural foam off in the frontal area. I don't think I'm ready to spend a grand on a helmet and immediately take a knife to it in order to (hopefully) solve a fit problem.

So, even though it's clearly a quality product, I think I'll pass on the Schuberth. I'll look for better or even custom earplugs or perhaps experiment with rigging up a chin curtain in my present KBC modular.

I find tying a bandana or scarf around my face like a bandit and then leaving it to hang down over my jacket reduces windnoise considerably.

Excessive Wind Noise Solved

I've solved the excessive wind noise issue with my V-Strom and avoided the purchase of a rather expensive helmet by:

1) Installing a higher, somewhat wider windscreen and adjusting it at a particular angle (Madstad Engineering screen and bracket) and;

2) Actually inserting my earplugs the proper way. This business of pulling up on the earlobe makes a huge difference. Who would have thought to read the instructions?

Hi Norm:

I'm a bit late to this conversation, as you have already made your helmet decision, but for the benefit of others who may be considering the Schuberth C3:

I bought this helmet (in BMW Version 6 form) a year ago. I like it and it is comfortable. It is, however, quite noisy when I use it on my Honda ST1100 which is fitted with a slightly larger than stock windscreen.

From this experience, I have learned that the 'quiet helmet experience' is very much 50% dependent on the helmet, and 50% dependent on the windscreen fitted to the motorcycle. So, I would advise others to try out a 'test helmet' for a day before making a purchase decision. My BMW dealer in Switzerland always keeps a stock of 'test helmets' of the more expensive models. At the price that these Schuberth helmets sell at, I would expect a dealer to have test helmets available for evaluation.

Thanks also for the excellent information about the chin curtain. I did not think about trying out the larger of the two to see if that would reduce noise... I'll try that this week and see if it makes a difference.

Michael

annoying whistling sound

Just bought the C3 4 days ago in France and rode it back to London, so 500 miles or so with it.

I know that mi windshield (touring one on a transalp 650) makes the wind hit me just at the level of my chin.

The C3 is indeed very quiet and great....appart from a really high pitch whistling noise coming from the lower part of the visor, just in the center.
it is not from the vent but from the seal of the visor. When I placed just 1 finger in the center of the visor it stopped.
Also when I stood up on the bike and full wind on the helmet it stopped.

So the wind distortion of the windscreen must be hitting the visor at a certain angle. Made it sooo annoying, even with ear plugs on.
After 30 minutes I ended up sellotaping the visor to the helmet sealed with many layers of tape.
Making my brand new helmet already looking like a 9 years old one. grrrrr.
