katadyn water filter

I know it's the wrong board but I trust you guys. Is this filter worth the money? I was also told that it will take out viruses as they stick to the other stuff that is filtered by the candle. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

I don't know much about the particular water filter. I did take another brand of water filter to West Africa once, but found it a hassle. Since then I have travelled extensively in Mali and Niger, and used Micropur tablets and found them really good. They are small, weight very little, quick and efficient. I was never ill from water having used them. The filter by comparison was heavy, occupied valuable pack space and was slow.

I also go for the Micropur when I only have a backpack. Don't forget that bottled water (check the top is properly sealed!) is available almost everywhere - even in some of the really out-of-the-way spots.

Hi,

I have the kadadyne (3-stage)
It filters also virusses and the thing I like about it is that the water tastes good.
A lot better then most bottled water (chloride etc) and better then with pills.

But... it is big and heavy. (I don,t agree with the slow part, it takes me 5 minutes to make 2 litre.)

I have the 'pocket' which is great marketing for the heaviest one. It is very well made and lasted 5 years so far, no problems at all.

Other filters broke, clogged, and were hard to clean by comparison.

It depends on where you're going. You can run out of pills, they can all get wet etc but the filter won't run out and get rids of nasties pills cannot.

I use an activated carbon filter thing to make the filtered water taste better afterwards.
