HG jackets/suits
 

Would love a bit of advice on the Hein Gericke jackets (suit combinations) for long distance travel, please. The choice is bewildering as there are so many models...Tuareg, Devon, Master, Voyager etc.
Does anybody have personal experience and a recommendation, please?

I have a Gore-tex Voyager. It's waterproof and comfortable which is important, obviously. Less obvious is the akward to use pockets. They don't close properly just one presstud and a bit of velcro. The lower, hip pockets are not waterproof and the zips are very sticky. In fact the main zip is sticky too. These things matter when your touring for weeks on end. My advice is check the pockets and zips before you commit to £250+

I am using Tuareg jacket and trousers. Had a bad accident in year 2000 when riding intercity. Still using the same HG jacket which I had accident with. I am satiafied with Tuareg and can't change to any other.

Sometimes I would like to go to BMW stuff. I can't be sure if I will be satisfied and will worth that much money but only the look will worth IMHO.

Think hard about where you're going, what kind of terrain, weather, temps etc.

I've found the HG stuff to be absolutely ideal for UK weather, but you get onto the mainland continent in summer, and you'll be roasting your cockles off.

I've gone through HG stuff (left it in Germany) to BMW Rally Pro (in storage) to Akito Desert. My preference is for akito in that you get both dry/hot out layer with waterproof mid and thermal inners which can be swapped at your leisure.

Oh and its like £200 all in.

i had a voyager suit for 8 years and it was great, i only changed because my blue jacket was grey and wouldnt wash out anymore! i kept the trousers though because the zip on bib and brace is fantastic.
i now use a devon jacket and i can say after a british winter and a week long rainy trip to the coupes moto legende its completely waterproof and fine when its hot because of the big zipped vents.
dont leave your waterproof pocket unzipped in the rain though.
check out the tuareg stuff carefully because on some of them the waterproof layer unzips with the thermal layer, a thoroughly dum feature IMHO. it doesnt rain when its hot?

I use 2006 H.G Toureg suit. The jacket has been superb. I only ride during the summer so I took out the padded insert as soon as I got it. The jacket is well made and not too hot in sunny weather. I haven't had a spill whilst wearing it but the armour seems pretty good (shoulders, elbow/wrist) although I did replace the back protector with a better model (the provided foam insert is pathetic).

The trousers are a little too large for me so I don't always wear them prefering a pair of leather jeans. The armour on the knees seems pretty good.

My advice is that the Toureg range of biker wear represents very good value for money compared to BMW stuff. You should be able to source a standard suit for less than £180. Mine is the top of the tree suit which sells for about £500.

used many HG jackets over the years. always seem to last around a year of every day UK riding, before the 'waterproofing' gives up.

best compromise I've worked out is buying a decent jacket, and completely disregard the waterproofing part of the purchase. then buy a local oversize £20 waterproof/windproof mac-in-a-sac type thing, which probably fits under your bike seat. replace the mac-in-a-sac when it starts leaking. also works for the trousers.

dunno where you're going, but down africa way an HG Air and waterproof/windproof shell worked well.

Hi Mountainboy, Virtually all my kit is HG, i find it excellent value for money and I've found the jackets and bottoms that say water proof are just that:eek3: and i ride nearly ( no ice/snow) all year round in the uk:thumbup1:
