Action Camera for Bike

I am really keen to get a camera mounted on my handlebars having seen friends / internet footage, but can't fathom out the vast differences in costs for the multitude of units available.

The few must have's I am looking for are:
- viewing screen so I can see where it's pointing
- smooth video, no jerky low frame rates
- small & light enough to mount onto handlebars or possibly helmet

There seems to be a ruck of models available on eBay for £30 to £40, but then you go up to the CamOne / GoPro ilk.

Any help / advice would be appreciated.

Cant fault my Drift HD. Has done everything I've wanted so far. Think I'll tick all the boxes you've mentioned but is around £200.

I only record upto 720p but it'll do 1080p. Few examples under my forum name on YouTube if your interested.

I have to Disagree with the Drift HD people up here

Gopro Hero3 is the clear winner out of the action cam's.
(make sure you read the comments after the video about compression and youtube so you know what i mean but here
Action Cam Battle: Hero 3 Black vs Contour+2 vs Sony Action Cam vs Drift Ghost - YouTube )

gopro's have an App so you can see on your phone what your camera is shooting in order to line up the right angle

Not fair to compare Hero 3 with Drift HD as they are different generations.

The Drift Ghost would be a more fair comparison and gives pretty much everything the Hero 3 does although personally I see no benefits to the extras on the Hero 3 or Ghost.

To make short movies and pictures while riding, I mounted a small and cheap camera on my handlebar with a second hand RAM-mount and a steel strip with a camera mounting screw that I bought for one euro at a photo shop.
This works fine for me.

The Fuji camera on the handlebar of my BMW

I may buy a more expensive waterproof camera later, because the Fuji (that I bought for € 40) is worn out after more then 12000 km in dust, wind and some rain on the handlebar of the BMW.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
