DARR Aluminium Boxes?
 

HI, I have previously used touratech boxes and was very happy with them. Looking to equipe a new bike and came across DARR boxes at 90 euros each, has anyone any experience of these boxes in comparison to Touratech, also the Hepco Becker rack frames better than Touratech or ?. ( England to Cambodia via China 2008)

The darr boxes are exactly the same as the H&B boxes which are exaclty the same as the EIBC (Alpro) boxes. So to save your self greef just contact EIBC and get his boxes which are the same price as Darr with postage. I have a Darr C29 as a top box and 36lt EIBC panniers. Works very well

I can't talk about an on-bike comparison since I opted for the cheaper Därr boxes and I've never owned Touratech boxes. No question, the Touratech boxes are and look a lot nicer.

The Därr boxes are not identical to the Hepco & Becker boxes in that the Därr boxes have a seam on the right side that is spot welded every few inches and then seam sealed with silicone. From what I remember, the H&B boxes have a seam at the rear that is welded along its full length.

I have my medium sized Därr boxes mounted to my racks using Touratech mount kits.

As for durability, they were both heavily loaded and withstood a 4400 mile tour, of which 660 miles were gravel road. They came through as the day they were installed. They are certainly good value. My Därr boxes were made in Hungary.

Daerr boxes used to be quite sturdy, but since Daerr was taken over by another company the quality was reduced IMHO. The material looked quite windy to me, so I opted for the Touratech panniers. Since then I've done 50,000 kms, very often rough roads (Southern Africa, Australian outback) and dropped the bike several times. They still look fine, though heavily scratched and slightly dented ;-)

I fitted the Touratech rack as well, which I would have taken anyway, even with other boxes. I reckon it's one of the best racks on the market.

Apparently the boxes from Metal Mule are very robust, but I havn't any experience with those. Besides, the're quite expensive.

Thanks al for your comments and observations, I have decided to buy Touratech racks and boxes in Germany works out quite a bit cheaper at current exchange rates. I will be travelling to Switzerland in February and will etour to either the Swiss agent or Toureatechs shop. If anyone wants anything picking up let me know ( I am in the car so spave isn't a problem)

Hi everyone. I'm new to this site and I have a question. Globalrider do you know which company or where in Hungary these cases are made ? I am living in Hungary and it would save me a trip to Munich in winter if I could buy from the manufacturer.

All boxes made by Därr is made of 1,2 mm aluminium nowadays. The former 0,8 mm boxes seems to be out of date now. Some guy told us that the boxes are made i Hungary. OK! Very cheap compared to the panniers made by "Touratech". I think I will order the boxes from Därr as it makes possible to use € to prepare the bike for the ride.:thumbup1:

I'm using a set of darr boxes and are very happy with them... I'm sure the TT boxes are better but then you get what you pay for..

I modified my boxes by making an outer ali panel with lip and then a inner pannel, its not quick to remove them but it works. I've dropped the bike without problems..by using 5cm washers I recon they'll stay on...

Got my own pair of boxes from Därr last week. Very well made, even sealed with silicon sealant. Happy surprise was the o-ring sealed lids. Ordered a pair of locks at the same time. Easy to install but does not stop any thieves.

Neither does Zega panniers from Touratech. It takes about 5 seconds to pry open the latch using a medium size tyre lever.

I have reading the post of DARR cases, but I could´nt find the web side.

I've got a pair. I re-inforced the mounting side. I've laid the bike on its side twice with them (once at 0mph, once at 2mph!) and they're un-damaged. They didn't let water in riding through storms. Cheap and functional.
