Asus eeepc1000 or eeepc1000H
 

I would preferr to buy the eeepc1000 since it has a solid state hardrive--but I can only get it with Linux OS, whereas the H model comes with Windows XP but standard hardrive. Any thoughts if the standard harddrive would stand up to the abuse on a trip across Central and South America?

Buy the 1000 with Linux and then format and put windows xp on it...

Unless you have very specific reasons for having Windows then go for the Linux version and don't even bother to install Windows on it, the Linux really is as good nay better than Windows and to use is almost identical.

If you must have Windows there's EeePc fora where you'll find everything you need to know about either installin Windows instead of Linux or indeed having a dual OS.

+1 for the linux, I run everything off mine. If you do need windows though you can just buy an SD card and chuck it on there and run 2 Os's.

Never worked with Linux--but it doesn't sound like a problem to catch on. My only concern is the compatibility with Garmin maps and Mapsource. I guess you are all suggesting to go with the SSD.

Exactly what I would like to do! But HOW? I see bits and pieces of how to's for installing Windows to USB, but all for over-baggaged versions of WinXP.

I have the Eeepc1000, it runs the original Linux (Xandros) very well. But I want to run one single application / hardware that insists on Windows XP, the MagicJack, a $20/year phone service device which uses USB. It doesn't need MSIE, Windows Media Player, all the extra services. Just a basic WinXP OS.

Find a free access Wifi AP with your EeePC while out biking or camping, boot to an SD card OS (WinXP), plug in your MagicJack and a small phone, and talk for 'free' - even when traveling abroad! Call US/Canada, receive calls from anywhere, no strings. AND... all from a lightweight EeePC (with a special SD card), and without replacing it's original -and very functional Linux OS.

The EeePC (1000) has great battery life and is only 2.9 lbs., and adding this function to all that would result in a portable phone line anywhere I go with the added bonus of no international roaming charges. There's got to be an easy way to make this happen...

or use the preloaded skype software with no need to boot into windows or carry around a "magicjack" or "small phone"?

i have eee900a with 4gb solid drive. came with xandros. first installed ubuntu eee. i was happy with it. then just because mapsourse i have switched to xp.

i 've used nlite to minimaze the xp. it was 160mb after nlited and 600mb after installed on eee900.
