Air filters-paper,foam or cloth?
 

Hi all,
Planning a trip from Oz to Uk. Which type of air filter do u recommend, paper, foam (K+N) or cloth(K+N)? Any particular reasons?

Bound to be some info there! There has been at least a couple of discussions on the pros and cons of foam versus paper versus gauze (K&N)

to KISS it:

Foam is best for long distance travel. Paper is easy cause it's stock - just buy a new one. K&N is best for horsepower, lousy off-road.

Grants right, well covered topic this one. Did all the research by reading all the relevant threads on this sight plus surfing the web, and decided foam was best if reusibility, and very good filtration are you primary concerns.
Problem I had was finding a foam filter for my Transalp. I got one in the end which I have placed over a old stock paper air filter (with the paper removed). I do use proper foam filter oil and cleaner at the moment but I believe you can oil them with engine oil and clean it with petrol, which is probably what I will do on my big trip next year as I don't want to be carrying around special oils and cleaners if I can help it. I think the engine oil isn't as 'tacky' as the proper foam oil so tends to run a bit but as long as you keep an eye on it and re-oil when necessary it should be fine. I'm going to test this out before starting on my trip though to see just how well/badly it works.

I carry a film can full of filter oil - it's good for about two washes if it's a small filter and you very carefully wring all the excess out and back into the can. Gas/Petrol to wash, and soap and water to finish do a great job. Let it air dry, then oil it.

Motor oil does work, preferably gearbox oil. Stickier and gooier. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif Dirt cheap/free for the tiny amount you need at any "service" station.

Has anybody cleaned their foam filter with petrol for a long period of time? I heard that gas/petrol will make the foam deteriorate faster. How does it hold?

Mine went 12 years without any problems, cleaned only in gas then washed in soapy water. I finally changed it because I was tired of carrying the spare I never needed.
