If that kit is indeed all you need, and your Dad has been spannering bikes for ages then perhaps he has all of it already? They helpfully list the contents, and I'm sure there are similar lists on advrider or ukgser?

I wonder what sort of mark up they make from selling one foot of electrical tape?!

One thing I would say is perhaps wait until you have trial loaded your stuff on the bikes and see where the best place to store tools ends up being. Theres no point buying a flat zip case if you end up using a tool tube cos it won't fit

Very good point... He probably has everything you need already. Get a nice tool roll (leather is best). They're less than a tenner. Again, on EBay new.

If you can afford a GS911 and know how to use it then it wouldn't hurt, it's quite small and light. I think I saw a used one on here the other day. I'd like one but they're a bit rich for me and its probably beyond my current skills and mechanical undersranding. I would suggest the BMW service and repair DVD though, that's pretty useful.

In HUBB there is a general focus on (good, solidly based, 1st hand) information, compared to other forums where everyone always has an opinion or comment to share. It is different and and important point here (and probably better) as MountainMan emphasizes... but I hope not to the point to exclude a one-sentence-good-joke-post with "apologies icons"! (at least, I enjoy that humour).

It may sound like a prejudice, but IMO the "GSA specific" tag of the tool kit may be adding an extra $ charge; at least I would do it if I were the marketer. Same if it were Ducati Multistrada or Yamaha ST1200, although BM may be a bigger target. Maybe not in the case of "C90 speficic" though. We all know that too.

G'day Angus,

I've got a GS911. On the first trip I did from Singapore to the UK we didn't have it with us and although I was confident of fixing anything mechanical I hate electrics and there was nothing worse than if you are standing by the side of the road scratching your head and wondering.

The electronics on the BMW are a bit more complicated than using two bits of wire and a bulb to check, and while the 911 won't fix a problem it will point you in the right direction. I got mine for the second trip last year TDF to Alaska.

Having said all that 120,000 km and I've never needed it! Like I said originally it was a peace of mind thing. I do use it now for balancing the throttle pots when I service it, and for the new 1200's you can reset the service light and a load of other checks. It's easy to use with your laptop.

like I said if you want more info PM me and I'll let you know what I think you should take with you in the way of spares and tools.

There have been times when I wish I had a GS911 for my F8 when I get what I suspect is my intermittent fuel pump problem. When I take to BMW they can never find any faults so it might be useful to have one to hand when it actually does it. Anyway, I digress... as your travelling together you could easily go halves on the cost of these big ticket tools and spares. It'll probably be a good investment. You might even meet an unfortunate GSer on the road whom you could save when you pull one out.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
