Web Hosting

I've been looking round the HUBB now for quite a while and have found some amazing websites from lots of travellers. I have set up a website for a property I have in France and that is currently hosted by my ISP VirginMedia. I would like to start a website for my RTW trip, but as I won't be keeping an internet connection I'd be interested in finding out your comments on any WebHosting services you might have used i.e. cost, bandwidth, storage space and reliability etc.
Thx and keep the websites coming

Web-site

I am using the American based YAHOO. They provide just everything need for a fee of $10 a month. HTML possible, templates, easy to work with (most important for me!!).

Some info from their site:

5GB disk space (upgrade possible)
200GB monthly transfer rate
Free domain name
200 e-mail addresses free

For more info, please check their homepage at yahoo small business

I am more than pleased with their service and with what I get for my money. This even more, since I am (not only maybe) a computer illiterate!!!

Safe riding

Klaus

one.com

I use One.com Web hosting**-**Domain • Hosting • E-mail** because it's quite cheap and very fast.

you can access your blog (if you want to make one) from the frontpage. No ftp programs or other webtools needed. You do however have full control of the website if you want to make one from scratch. Personally I have used one of the very nice looking templates that you can choose from. But I might change it to something more personal later on.

From the admin login, you can access your mail directly. So no matter where you are, you can send and recieve mails. Oh, and you can have as many mail aliases as you want.

Price is 1.25 Euro pr month for 1GB space (more than enough for me), and unlimited transfer. If you want 4GB it costs 4.90 Euro pr month. Personally I cannot see what you would do with all that space. Maybe if you upload a ton of films and such

Bear in mind that there is a 12 Euro setup fee for the domain name and that you have to pay for a full year in advance. If you pay by credit card, the domain is setup the next working day.

I can certainly recommend it.

PS: You are welcome to look at my website, but I'm just messing around with it for now. Nothing of real interest.

Torsten's great escape

Thumbs up

Hi Panhandle -

I have a small hosting company, strangely enough I'm only located a few miles from you on the Isle of Wight!!!

Anyway, you are welcome to host you site FREE on my server, you can have 10Gb of Webspace and unlimited bandwidth. You can access the site from any web browser and if you create your page with Joomla or similar updating it is a breeze.

All you will need is a domain name, these can be bought very cheaply through 1and1.co.uk, they are currently £2.99 a year. I can then give you instruction of how to redirect your domain name to my server.

Piers

Hi Piersuk,
Thanks for your offer, but I was a bit quick off the mark and went ahead with one.com just after I posted my last reply. Maybe I shouldn't be so hasty in future.

Anyway, the site is a work in progress at the moment, just playing around with it trying to learn a few things.
If anyone is interested the address is Home
(I know, I know!! The Mrs liked it 'tho). Don't expect anything professional.
thanks again
Kev

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
