Mobile Phones

Hi

From what little I've heard it's bloody expensive th use a mobile phone to call home from foreign countries, both for the caller but also the recipient. Is there a cheaper way around this?

Certainly is. Some countries have "telephone shops", some offer this service in the general post office, other countries sell telephone cards to be used on their public phone booths.

Hi !!!
Disagreed .... Most countries.. is actually cheaper to phone home directly with your handset (assuming ITs GSM compatible) ... than going to a phone shop.

After being in Most of west Africa.. -other than Morocco -.. when I saw the bill.. It was actually quite cheaper than 1 Euro / Min.

At worst .. and If you plan to say for awhile in a country .. you can buy -either phone cards (that scratchy thingy) or a SIM card for really little money .. but- IMHO .. the cheapest way -on average- is just to phone directly home with your EU handset.

Morrocco was not prohibitively expensive when I was there. Didn't have any huge natters with a girlfriend or anything. Although did have a couple of "Aaargh, how do I work out whats wrong with my car?" chats with my old man when the electrics started playing up. Morrocco also has remarkably good coverage. I'd say as long as you keep your phone for emergencies and short calls only I reckon its a reasonable way of communicating.
However, wrote off my bike in Norway last week and am waitning for my phone bill with trepidation as it took a number of long conversations with my insurance company to sort it all out. If it turns out to be crippling I'll post on the forum and let you know!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
