Internet Access in Africa

Guys

Planning to do UK to Cape town (possibly back not sure yet) in two years time - how do you access, if at all, the internet along the way in the more remote areas and how common are these remote areas???

Cheers

You will not have any problem, there are plenty internet cafe opertunities in all big towns through east Africa. They are marked clearly and prices are not too bad. (that was 2 years ago when I went through)

Try schools if you are in very rural areas. also lodges have. really just about anywhere. Just dont expect to send 20megs in a minute though.

And watch your security!!!!! they tend to like copying all your banking details. Take a U3 stick with you.

Hi its a flash drive that has software on it. Basically can plug it in and makes the computer a slave "so to speak" it can even access your own pc at home and replicate everything on it. Once you disconnect it leaves no info on the pc. Very handy for banking. There have been attempts to crack the software and i think only 2 or 3 versions are "hack" proof. But they are about 50 dollars or so.

go for Gmail

And also, hotmail is chronically slow and yahoo old version was ok but the new one - impossible. Gmail was the best by far.

I used blogger for my blogsite and uploading images was an issue. Very slow and some just couldn't. Some friends of mine used a blog site just for travel and had lower res pix and much easier time uploading.

Most places could use a stick. Some computers were seriously old. Viruses are also a problem.

I saved NB docs on my online email account. That way I could download and print in necessary.

Its expensive and slow but there were dodgy little internet places all over. Every now and then, there would be a fast good service but mostly not. But you can keep in touch. Certainly the tourist areas have internet and if you are desperate go to a good ***** hotel because they normally had internet and would let a dirty biker in to use it.
