Connecting laptop to WIFI on the road.

I need help! I have an Asus Eee PC 900 running Linux. I am able to connect to WIFI at home, in England and also in Scotland. However, when I was in Spain last week it would not connect to the hotel WIFI. I had entered WPA and inserted the correct code that the hotel gave me. Others were successful. But I had no luck. I kept getting the message “… pending …” I am going up to Nordscape end of July/early August. I want to be able to use it in Sweden, Norway, Finland etc. I suspect that other people must have experienced this issue. What do I need to do to allow me to connect to WIFI when my computer will not?

If you are having the same problem as I had, make sure your Internet Protocols are set to automatically obtain an IP Address and DNS Server Address. I had problems connecting because I have mine optimally configured.

1. Basically go to 'Network Connections' and right click on the relevent wireless connection. Click on 'Properties' (hit 'continue' if prompted).

2. Click to highlight 'Internet Protocol Version 4' then click properties.

3. Now check 'Obtain an IP Address Automatically' and check 'Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically'. Finish by clicking 'OK' to save settings and you should be able to connect to the internet.

If you have these set to something unique make a note of them before you change them so that you can change them back when you get home. Hope this helps. bier

I have an older WiFi device that doesn't have WPA2 encryption and so any WiFi point that uses this I can't connect with. Check in your device whether you can manually figure the encryption type and check if WPA2 exists in the list. If it isn't there then it's highly likely that the hotel WiFi you were connecting to used WPA2 and it means that your device (laptop) is incompatible with the WiFi encryption... when this occurs usually you will see status connecting... but never connected.

What to do if this is the case.

You can see if you can get a software upgrade for your laptop that has WPA2.

Failing that you'll be limited to only WEP and WPA (not WPA2) WiFi spots.

Not sure if it helps, but I have an Asus Eee 901 with Linux (both xandrox and Ubuntu) and I live in Sweden.

So far I have been able to connect to all open networks I have tested, both in Sweden and abroad, the only ones that haven't worked have locked out my MAC-address (probably all MAC addresses other then a few), but that shouldn't be your problem in Spain since you were supposed to connect to it. I don't know it there is a difference between the 900 model and the 901 model when it comes to the Wifi card. I guess you can buy a modern separate USB Wifi card if your built in card is the problem.

I hope you will have a great trip here even if you can't get the wifi working.

Edit: If it is the WPA2 encryption that doesn't exist and you can't find a new software for it I can recommend installing Ubuntu netbook remix, it is a great operating system.
