Cell phone with standard batteries?

Does such an animal exist? I don't want to carry yet another charger, plus the phone battery will always run flat when you most need it (Murphy's Law).

Hi there,

I'm not sure if you can buy phones that use standard AA, AAA batteries etc.

However, I did convert my Bosch 509 phone to run on 4.5volt torch batteries. Simply solder two wires to the relevant parts on the phone and away you go...

The benefit of this is that 4.5volt batteries are readily available in all EU countries and also, because the phone is old and worthless, it doesn't matter if I lose it...

hth,
Simon

There does exist adaptors to cell phones that use standard batteries to charge your cell phone battery, not as efficient, but nice to have. There does also exist hand powered chargers... just wind away. http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/memorysuppliers/charger9 http://www.memorysuppliers.com/charger.html

There are also wind (air) powered chargers and numerous other gadgets

Interesting solutions, but not quite what I'm after. The 4.5V battery means the phone is no longer portable like it was. The other two gadgets are chargers. I could much easier plug it into the bike.

I want to do away with the original battery, which will die at some point anyway, and use an adapter with AA or AAA batteries. I already have to carry batteries and charger for torch and camera, so that makes sense to me.

If you google long enough I am certain that you will find what you are looking for. I know there have been plans for making cheap phones for third world countries where neither electricity or landlines are found everywhere...

On my first googling I came up with this one.. I'm not sure if you can put any sim-card into it. It is a phone which uses three regular aa batteries and comes with a precharged/prepayed sim card. The phone is rechargable but cannot send or receive sms messages... the world is full of wonderful gadgets http://www.gearbits.com/images/cyclonephone.jpg

Thanks Wheelie, but the co. seems to already have gone out of business.

However, I found it! Ironically, it's been right under my nose all this time. It's my parents' phone!

Alcatel Onetouch Easy db. You can remove the battery (which contains 3 AAA batteries anyway) and insert 3 AAA batteries. Works with rechargeables, too.

As Murphy would have it I have already bought another phone and 12V adapter. Duh! :(

Hi,

I've rigged up a 12v cig socket under the seat and just use the ordinary

charger lead. I can also charge my AA and AAA batts for radio and MP3.

No probs for 2 years.

A cig socket just fits inside a film can ! Neat and insulated.

Make sure its fused though ( 3 Amp )
