Best cell phone coverage?
 

Whats the best network to go with to get cell phone coverage down Africa?
Presuming Vodafone?
Is it easier to just buy local SIM cards?

definitely take an unlocked phone and buy local sim cards. they are absolutely mad on mobiles now in africa and you won't struggle for sim cards, and most towns and main roads are covered by mobile reception too. you will save yourself a lot of money, and be able to relax and phone home when you want to without worrying about the rediculous costs!

IMHO : The best by far : UK Vodafone or Spanish's Vodafone (I tried them both and seem to have equivalent coverage , probbably being the same provider ) .

Other than that (I tried recently UK Cellnet , UK Orange , SP Orange , SP Movistar , BTOne ) and are kinda hit or miss . For whichever reason , they seem unable to get a GSMLock in Senegal , or Mauritania , or Gambia , while any vodafone do.
