I have a long experience about cell phones. Better said, about cell phone bills. I spent lots of money till I got the perfect solution. Forget cell phones and try tam tam or smoke signals or just loose yourself, grow beard and live like a hippy.

But if you need to get in touch and use cell phones, I am gonna say what I am doing. First at all, cell phones work everywhere. Africa is very well connected and the network covers all the main routes and cities.

I always carry 3 cell phones:

One within Spanish sim card to receive sms and calls from my country. I do not answer them because the price of roaming is crazy expensive, but I can identify who is calling and call them back from skype or my international sim card.

Second phone within local sim card for local callings. It is very easy and cheap buying local sim cards, especially in Africa. You will see guys selling them in any corner or fill station.

Third phone within international sim card. Mine is from http://www.ekit.com/ekit/home

I bought that sim in USA and works pretty Ok in most of the countries (not in Lesotho or Swaziland). In the most of them, receiving calls are free but in Mozambique, you have to pay some. But I can say is very cheap compared with national roaming. You pay in US dollars and is easy to buy air time by internet.

And how about internet??

I carry a laptop (I am writing this post from it in a motel room in Johannesburg) and a USB modem. I can buy a sim card in Spain to use it worldwide. 50 euros, 50 megas monthly. Is enough to check mails. But I also buy local sim cards for USB modems. In South Africa and Mozambique, for instance, you can buy prepaid sim card for internet and the price is really good. Sometimes it goes slow, but WTF! This is Africa!

Enjoy and get connected.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
