Alternatives to internet cafes in S. America??

Internet cafes are the bane of my existence. And satelite systems (at least the per minute charge) exhorbitantly expensive. Anyone have any new info for me???
And I HAVE to use my laptop for my work.... ANY brilliant ideas appreciated!

Thank you for this, but in countries like Bolivia, where internet isn't always very common, I don't think this works. BUT, what about logging into satelite systems?? I often camp near towers, and get all excited when I see there's a signal, but of course I don't have the IP number to connect....Is there a solution there? I don't have to be logged on for long...
