Do yourself a favor and don't ever eat at them!

 aaaw ,c'mon Mike , aren't you being a bit too harsh on all those Gringo-international -style chain eateries?
For sure one can eat well and for less money at the small locally owned restaurants and taquerias .
But if Cyberbiker feels the need for some familiar fare now and then the well known and Mexican or Central American burger, pizza or chicken chains need not be spurned . You get to observe a different stratum of the local society and are supporting the local youth who work there.
Just don't go there everyday for three meals to overdose on the triple-sized "eight dollar burger" with supersized accompaniments.
The restaurants of VIPS,TOKS,CHICS and California and Sanborn's are not really "fast food" but are rather swanky and pricy, more in line with Denny's, attracting the more monied business folk . But they are good for an occasional visit, just for the experience. And VIPS does serve a pretty good bottomless cup of coffee ,does not itemize each cup on the
bill ----> coffeebeer cup emoticon required here, glug glugglug,glug.....donde estan las sanitarios. =)
But for Cyberbiker it is about the free wifi and that is not often found at the small eateries. Plus the washrooms are kept in pretty good condition- so it becomes a multi-purpose visit:whistling::rolleyes2:
Cyber, did you know that VIPS is operated by ,of all things WalMart? ( they also have a more Mexican chain called El Porton) It is a wonder that they do not grow the brand into the USA ( or do they already have a chain there ?)

Pollo Campero is primarily Guatemala with branches in Mexico and even the US!

I've had wi-fi in an Esso Tiger Mart in Honduras. Brought in the laptop and MagicJack and called home for free!!

When I've travelled in Mexico I've always found that any town bigger than a hamlet will have internet cafes galore.

And seriously, in three years of living in Mexico I don't think I ate in a McDonald's once. You can get yourself a great home style comida corrida for a few pesos all over the place.

wifi

As the original post dates from 2012 the situation has changed slightly in 2019.
The number of cyber cafes has decreased noticeably as the number of people owning internet accessing smart phones has exploded. The need for them has shrunk .
Most any hotel now will have wifi for guests and there are often free wifi hot spots marked at the central plaza in many towns in Mexico . WalMart /Aurrera supermarkets have wifi
At some of the restaurants a password is still required to enter wifi and it may be posted at the cash register or on a wall, or you can ask the waiter or cashier .

Some restaurants do have wifi but you need to go through a second layer like a having a social media account;, that can be frustrating for those of us who dont use those sort of sites .

I would agree Mexico has come a long way in the aspect of wifi access in cafes. When I first went on a biking trip there back in 2010 it was a living hell. There was no internet and in those few places you could find something the signal was slow and constant power shortages would cause the signal to be lost completely. I went to Mexico with my friends a few months ago and it was a great improvement. Local shops are much better equipped with commercial food displays brand new ACs and the design of the places are a lot more inviting then they used to be. The power access is better, there are no power shortages and the overall impression is a lot better.
