Via roads, it is almost 4,000 miles from Cabo San Lucas to Cancun.

What part of Mexico?
Lonely Planet and other travel books have good listings.

If you are in the north, I have heard from first hand info., not experience :-( to try Mike's Sky Ranch. It is a dedicated off-roaders hotel, but it is pricey. It is one of the checkpoints and stops on the Baja off-road races (the Tecate/SCORE series), so make sure there is not a race that week. It has more to do with its history in off-road racing than being an authentic Mexican experience.

Read through people's rides, such as Greg Frazier's stories, to read about some of the places to stay.

I second the Lonely Planet sugestion, it was a great help while looking for a cheap hotel in every city i visited. Otherwice, go to the Plaza of any city and you will find whatever your looking for nearby.

No argument with Mr Ron's suggestions for Lonely Planet guide and going to the plaza.
Problem with most guide books is that they seem all to cocentrate on areas and towns which are targeted by travellers, the "certified " tourist destinations and leave great swaths of the country unmentioned , giving the impression to the uninitiated that there may be vast areas in between with no possible place to easily get a room. Not so , this may cause such tourists to hasten from one listed town to another and rush past perfectly good locations. As Mr. Ron suggests , go to the plaza of ANY town and you will be nearly guaranteed to see at least one small hotel, or a superdeluxehyperpriced hotel. Just ask the local taxidrivers waiting for a fare if they can suggest an economical hotel , it may be a few streets back from the plaza, near a mercado or near a bus terminal, good places to search.

"ANY town" could be misleading as there are many small towns with plaza/zocalo, but w/o hotel, bus terminal, taxi, mercado, etc.

As you've said, there are hundreds of places not listed in the 'Guide Books' that are great locations. It would be virtually impossible to cover them all. Off-the-beaten-path lie true gems.

Touchee, I was a bit too general in saying "ANY town" because I was assuming that by "town" it would be understood to be of a certain size , bigger than a crossroad bus stop, a hamlet ,or a village which all can be marked by a plaza, even if it is only a weed strewn patch of dry earth with a few eucalyptus trees
Still any small town of ,say , 2000 habitantes or more usually has some place to get a room and ,as you say ,off the beaten path even a small village can have a hospedaje, or a cross roads motel. It also depends on the distances between population centers.If big cities and towns are close together hotels in the smaller in between places may be less likely having been outcompeted as the modern traffic rushes by, but in the boondocks the smaller towns are ready to serve the weary traveller.

we met up with other bikers in mexico who also did what we did.....stayed in the sex motels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Easy to find on the highways. They call them Auto Motels. Great parking!!!! Clean rooms and you get to rent for 3 hours up to all night. Different rates for differnt times. I am not kidding. We found them to be clean and cheap .....you can bargain them down a lot from the first quote. The mirrors can be a bonus or off putting depending on how you look at it.....and we met one biker couple who said they even had a dance pole in one of their rooms.

They are not as sleezy looking as you would imagine...in fact quite the reverse. Do check thyem out. Youy will get a laugh if nothing else. Especially the way they pull the curtain over the car port to hide the vehicle.
