U.S. to Honduras

I'm heading to Honduras in Feb., when I get there I'm planning to donate my bike to a mission. My question is- will I have a problem with customs when I exit? I was told I could sell the bike to the mission for 1$ and would'nt have a problem once the title was in there name. Any first hand experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dan

This sounds like a question for the Honduran Consulate in the U.S. I would make sure with them that there is a procedure that will allow this and get the required forms, exemption regs, etc.

Or you could have the mission check with their attorney and get you the specifics.

Otherwise, I would assume that this is a no-no and Honduras will require you to leave with your bike. Keep in mind that the number one fear of these countries' customs offices is that you will sell your imported vehicle in the country without paying the required tariffs.

Nov 04 we rode 2 KLR from Green Bay, Wisconsin to Honduras (hey ,HI Lomira!)...and left the bikes on Roatan for the winter....we had the import permit, that basically expired...out local contact there said it was a major problem to renew and extend that permit with his friend who runs the customs office On Roatan...(he has been living there and does business there since late 60s)

we paid $150 etxra each to extend that permit once we returned in spring to ride them back.

anyway...we flew home in between that time...no problem exiting the country. Our passports did not have any stamps in them saying we brought in a bike. And when we crossed back into Guatemala (at El Florido which I highly reccomend this crossing, less than 30 minutes to exit and enter...near Copan), there was no question nor did anybody look at our import permits...so that was a waste of $150 to extend them in a legal manner...

so take it for what it's worth, but I dont; see a problem for you, just for them and paying the high import duty on a vehicle

Ps check our ride report here...partial..

Thanks FREEFLOW, I emailed you some questions, but got most my answers in your ride report. Still wondering if the vehicle permit is computer generated, causing me a problem when I try to get a permit next year on a diffrent bike. Hopefully the mission gets that all squared away. Thanks again Dan
